"Bracket Lames"

"Here are five additional favorites that could flounder:

Marquette Golden Eagles (REC: 23-8, RPI: 12, RPI top-50 Ws: 7-6, Seed: 3, Region: East)
Listen to any televised broadcast featuring the Golden Eagles over the past couple weeks and almost every announcing team has pegged them as a team to fear. I couldn't disagree more. On the surface, this year's Marquette squad is akin to previous versions, a club equipped with long, explosive athletes who attack the rim and run the floor like gazelles. Vander Blue, who's played exceptional basketball of late, is an explosive high-flyer. The Eagles are very active around the basket generating a ton of offensive rebounds. They also relish contact, drawing abundant whistles, which they take advantage of. Collectively, they shoot better than 72 percent from the free-throw line. But their underlying profile is loaded with black-eyes. On offense, they are atrocious from three. Only 18.5 percent of their points scored come from beyond the arc. Worst yet, they often shoot themselves in the foot, serving opponents the ball on a silver platter. On the season, they've committed turnovers 21 percent of the time. Defensively, Marquette is above average, but often loses battles on the defensive glass. Over-sized clubs that ramp up pressure and block out will cause it fits, such as Miami and Bucknell, teams in its end of the bracket. Ignore the common narrative. These Eagles will soon be grounded."

I think all but one of the CBSSPORTS "Experts" had Davidsons beating us right out of the gates

I wonder what they had to say about the 2003 team which was also a 3 seed and went to the Final Four...

They probably had something to say about that team's shooting guard who wore #3.

The 2003 team had 3 future NBA players, including a first ballot Hall of Famer who was the best college bball player I ever personally watched live.
We Are Marquette

Everyone is saying that we lose to Davidson because of our inability to win on the road and how different of a team we are away from home...arent a lot of teams like that???

Most teams are like that.

Actually a fairly accurate glance at the squad.

It's not far off but claiming MU has explosive athletes and runs the floor like gazelles makes me think he hasn't watched many games this year.

Actually a fairly accurate glance at the squad.

Do Chris Otule, Devante Gardner, Junior, and Trent (four guys who play many minutes) represent "gazelle like athletes" who run up and down the floor?  I think that is a clear indication that he has read the box scores and some articles and never watched a game.

homer here.
I'm worried. Terrible matchup. Davidson is ten points better than any of the other 14 seeds. Buzz compared them to Notre Dame. Enough said. This team always finds a way, and I believe that they will again against Davidson. But it will be tough...very tough.

You probably remember the old Davidson that used to show up at the a&cc year in and out.  They've come a long way since then.

Hey Homer - always glad to see you pop on here!  Where do you think Davidson should have been seeded, out of curiosity?  Also - I'm assuming we're slightly overseeded (I think some here were expecting to be a 4 seed).  Is that a fair representation?
Relax. Respect the Process.

Yep. MU couldn't manage to check Connaughton on Thursday. The fact that they have multiple shooters to worry about scares me.

Except ND has six bigs it can throw at you, Davidson has just the two that they start.  Maybe another 6-7, 227 lb guy will come back from a concussion after which he missed the last 16 games in time for the game.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Did everyone forget that Atkins scored all day on Marquette at the BMOHBC?

Connaughton had zero points that game. Clearly, the plan was to stop Atkins in the tournament. PC only shot for attempts in 31 minutes. Great defense.

Looking at Davidson, I don't see any player that's going to beat Marquette like Atkins. If they want to bomb away from the arc, go ahead and MU wins. They can guard when that is the strength, if they can flash the lane effectively, then there may be a problem.

MUEng92

I prefer to think MU will make history Thursday.  They can be the first 3 seed to upset a 14 seed.

+1. Some of these people are ridiculous and just love to create anxiety for themselves.

Davidson is a good team, no doubt underseeded, but they aren't Duke or Kansas.

Exactly.  That's why I asked Homer where he thought they should have been seeded.  I'd say what, a 10/11 as the upper bounds here for them?

As long as MU brings it on Thursday, they should win.
Relax. Respect the Process.

Unless, of course, they bomb away at, say, 60 percent and outscore us 42-6 from the 3-point line.

homer is right. Folks here are seriously underestimating Davidson. Some have criticized Yahoo types for writing without having seen Marquette. I wonder how many Marquette fans have seen Davidson.
"It's not how white men fight." - Tucker Carlson

"Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." - George Washington

"In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

4everwarriors

Marquette got a very favorable draw and if they can't beat Davidson/Butler/Bucknell, then it's on them and Buzz needs better players. Had they beaten ND in the Garden, we'd all be bitchin' 'bout their draw as a 2 seed.
