Question about location

Are all first round locations locked in?  For example, is the 4 seed in the West region locked into San Jose for the first 2 rounds?  Or, since they try to "honor" locations for the top 4 seeds, could the 4 seed in the West be either in San Jose or Salt Lake City if it is a far western team, or else in maybe a Kansas City, MO if it is a Midwestern (Marquette) team?

Just looked at flights for San Jose, Austin, and Salt Lake City.  It ain't gonna be cheap if we're shipped out West.

Makes sense.  I guess I'm still confused about whether the locations are locked in based on where you are.  Is the 1 seed in the Midwest, for example, playing in Louisville, regardless of whether that 1 seed is Louisville or Indiana?  And then say Louisville gets that spot, does Indiana then get placed in a set spot for the 1 seed in the East bracket?  Or does can the 1st 2 rounds be moved around (if the bottom 2 seed is somebody like Miami and are put in the West bracket, are they playing their first 2 rounds in San Jose/SLC as well, or could they play in the East for the first 2 rounds as a higher seed?)?

No.  They used to be locked into the brackets, but now they can assign a team to go anywhere in the first two rounds.

Let me try to do this by example.  Let's say Louisville is the overall #1 (#1 team of the 4 number one seeds).  That'll get them the Midwest Region (Indy).  For rounds 2 & 3 they will either go to Dayton or Lexington.  Now let's say Indiana is the last #1 seed and thus assigned to the last available region (East?) located in Washington DC.  Well, as a top line seed they'd be 4th in the pecking order in terms of 2/3 round assignments.  Again, likely Dayton or Lexington.  Notice that Dayton doesn't 'feed' any particular region.

Now let's go to the very end of the #4 seed line. (And for grins let's assume that's Marquette.)  So we get our own pod as every 2/3 site has exactly 2 of them (day bracket, evening bracket).  But as the last of the teams leading a group somewhere, we'd get last dibs.  With the dearth of teams naturally out west at either San Jose or Salt Lake City, expect that assignment.

Complicating that scenario is the committee's desire to keep conference foes or previous opponents away from each other too early in the tourney.  So none of this is an exact science.  Kind of funny how slipping to the #5 line might actually improve our first weekend location but we'll just have to wait and see.  Either way expect a #4/#5 match-up to get to the Sweet 16.

Yeah I looked into airports within 80 miles of San Jose.  It is cheaper to fly into SFO, but it still is far from cheap.

Last year for the S16 I used frequent flyer miles. My biggest gripe with the tourney would be (if I didn't stack major, major cash) that it's costly to book flights to some locations on such short notice.
