Mookie Jones lists MU as a finalist

Mookie Jones lists MU as a finalist
Well, well, well......here's a pleasant surprise. Mookie Jones, a 6-6 SF from Peekskill (NY) High School, pared his list down to six suitors -- Marquette, DePaul, Rutgers, Michigan, Syracuse and Kansas. Zag's blog was all over it, as usual. Syracuse has blanketed Jones for sometime. Head coach Jim Boeheim spoke at the Red Devils' basketball banquet in Cortlandt Manor earlier this year.

Jones might the most clutch player in the Class of 2008. Slowed by an injury the spring and summer of 2006, Jones' play improved as his junior season rolled along along. The wiry wing led the Red Devils to the program's third straight Class A state title and another Federation championship. Jones was largely responsible for the Peekskill post-season dominance, winning two games at the buzzer in the post-season including a game winning three-pointer to claim the Federation crown -- the so-called 'Mookie Miracle'. Jones is carving out quite a spot in Peekskill basketball history which is saying something since alums include Brent Dabbs, Elton Brand and Hilton Armstrong.

The kid has moxie, and is blowing up this summer. We don't have word on any official visits from Jones, but will keep you posted.

Tom Crean continues to surprise on the recruiting front this summer and early fall. In the past, MU has consistently failed to attract strong interest from true SF prospects -- a notable gap on the roster for years in Milwaukee. Between Jones, Goulbourne, Swopshire and Woolriddge it seems that MU is likely to break the cycle at the SF slot.

It is truly astounding the number of high level recruits that have MU on their short list.   Now close the deal with some of these kids.   This could be our first legitimated top 15 class in forever.

now that we're in the running w/ some legit heavyweights, let's see if we can "close the deal". :o

It's interesting that .. after the Final Four year, most expected a recruiting bump (which, one could point at DJ, McNeal, and Wes) .. but the biggest recruiting bump might turn out to be the combination of DWade, and MU's success in the BE.

I think the combination of success after moving to the Big East, Wade's success in the NBA, and the mere mention of having MU grads in the NBA now, even if they are bench players, is added positive press for the University.  Applications continue to increase and the athletics recognition and recruitment should increase along with this.

I think people misunderstand the time it takes to build a reputation and how early in their high school career these kids are starting to define what schools they consider to be "big time."  Final 4, Wade, Playing in the Big East, Beating U Conn on national TV, being on TV are all part of recognition that allows you to move up in recruiting.  It also doesn't hurt to have a coach who now appears pretty locked in at MU.  If you just needed to get to the final 4 to get a recruiting bump then George Mason should be competing with the big boys right now.  Its clear they are not because one thing does not a reputation make.

RSCI would be the truest indicator in my book, or do they only rank classes based on guys who finished in their top 100??

They only use players that were ranked, so for that class, Burke, Mortensen and Jamil Lott don't count(not much different than reality).  It's based upon a points system, 100 points for the #1 1, 99 points for #2 etc.  You add up the point of the players each team has and then whoever has the most has the best class.

It can lead to a team with more top 100 guys doing better than a team with a small class but higher ranked guys.  NC State for example had two players that ranked higher than any of MU's but finished behind them because MU had 3 guys in the top 100.
