Something that hasn't been talked about regarding last night:

We came out very well prepared in the first half, led 17-4 after 9 minutes, then fell apart and trailed 29-25 at the half. We regrouped, adjusted and after 10.5 minutes of the second half led 48-44 only to lose 73-65. So we we won the first half (of both halves) 40-19 and lost the seconds 54-25. Some of it was our centers sitting (in half one) but it also looked like ND's very physical play took its toll on us. We looked like we hit a wall. Thoughts?

Let me start with, I love Buzz and hope he is our coach for 30 years, but he got out-coached last night.

Considering Marquette is the most physical team in the league it would be disappointing if they would succumb to another team's physicality, especially a not so aggressive Notre Dame team.

It came down to a few terrible offensive possessions around the five minute mark. Vander's back to back poor penetration looking for the foul followed by Cadougan's airball 3 followed by Jamil's corner 3 off the top of the backboard was wincing.

I cannot agree that Buzz was outcoached completely. While ND is far from great team I think we probably split 5-5 if we played them ten times. When are weaknesses are exposed we lose and when we play better and limit weknesses we tend to win. Honestly when we were up 17-4 I told my wife that is not a good thing because of the way ND as playing we should be up 25-4. Disappointed in loss but not going to lose sleep over it.

Could not agree more.

As noted in other threads, the Georgetown, Villanova and Notre Dame last night all had the same pattern.

This is because of lots of reasons re-hashed all of which have been re-hashed to death.

One theory is simply that Coach Williams has been out-coached. One has to ask, out coached, or too conservative on the road? Because it seems that Coach Williams more conservative on the road and to have coached more aggressively home. (Or, is it that winning at home makes it seem that way?)

Last night he seemed very conservative as he kept his bigs on the bench too long, did not call a time-out during either turn-over frenzy, did not mix his defenses, seemed to go with a (new) small line-up at the wrong time/for too long, etc.

(As a footnote, on TV, Coach Williams did not look well ... as when one has influenza. Though it could have been a physical reaction to turn-overs and his team playing flat footed for periods of time.)

Regardless, it might be best if Coach Williams where to "let go" and be less conservative/predictable on the road.
