Postseason statistical primer: Marquette offense

Written by: Mark Strotman

Marquette's offense has had its struggles–it failed to top 60 points five different times-in 2012-'13, but it's impossible to deny the team's efficiency. KenPom ranks the Golden Eagles as the 16th most efficient offense (113.9), almost three points higher than ... Continue reading →

Awesome write-ups, gents.  On the past "Basketball Weekly", Buzz commented on the turnovers.  He said while, this team has the same number of turnovers per game as last year's, this team plays at a much slower pace, which makes catching up on that empty possession harder...but they have been able to do it so far with eFG%.  But, he is a big focus to improve, post-season.

  • 2012-13:  TO's per game:  13.5 | TO Rate: 20.9% | A/TO: 1.07
  • 2011-12:  TO's per game:  13.2 | TO Rate: 18.6% | A/TO: 1.26

Buzz has been trying to do some things differently against the zone and pressure which have been very effective in spots.  Adjustments like having the taller Vander and Jamil inbound in the backcourt versus full court pressure to throw over the defenders to Junior and half court to dribble advance the ball.  In the half court, he has also used Vander at the top of the key as the PG distributor with Junior on the wing as the dribble penetrator on the seams.  We have also discussed how effective Steve Taylor has been by being active inside the zones, and the Ox-Otule big line-up.  Buzz is just an amazing coach in this point-counter point game with other great BE coaches.

Our Achilles heel....turnovers. This year Buzz decided to throttle back the offense. In a 64 possession game we can't afford to have 14+ t/os, particularly against quality opponents. Depending on the draw we can force a good match up with almost everyone.

I see a very tough problem with Louisville because of their pressure. Junior better bring his A game the rest of the way.
