Junior forward Davante Gardner has received the BIG EAST Sixth Man Award and senior guard Junior Cadougan claimed the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award, the league office announced Monday morning.

Gardner was a lock for the 6th Man.

Good for Junior on the Sportsmanship Award, nice to go out with some hardware.

Gardner is a starter coming off the bench, so it's the logical choice.

Side note: the OX nickname has to go. I keep picturing a fat cow struggling to pull his weight. How about The Bull, or Ram, Tank, Bulldozier, or The Hulk Gardner. Just something to think about.

We can forget about worrying what our seed will be or how we'll do in the BET or NCAA's because in my Catholic middle school I was taught that sportsmanship is more important than any win.

The only question is should this be a separate banner each year, or should we have one banner for all of our sportsmanship championships?

Gardner does have a nickname, drum roll please............  De' De'

Buzz calls Davante by that nickname all the time.  Swish it around in your mouth a bit, it sounds great!

Wonderful accomplishment. Congratulations to the cookie monster.

Marquette, fresh off winning a share of the Big East regular-season title this weekend, picked up a couple of individual conference awards Monday morning.

That wasn't at all douchie.

Congrats to both Junior and Davante on their accomplishments.

Honestly, I think it's pretty accurate.

I like Ox. Sounds powerful enough to me.
One of my buddies that I watch all the games with calls him Sloppy Grits.  I have no idea where he got the name from but he has been running with it for the past two years.

Litehouse

Dancing Bear is another one I've heard for Davante.  Feed the bear and watch him dance.

Did you see the game Saturday?

I'm kidding, but I agree its a stupid nickname. That said, outside of a small handful here, I don't think anyone actually calls him that, so I don't think it even is a nickname.

2 years ago I was watching a game with my son-in-law (a semi-big guy himself) when he saw Davante play for the first time. Noting how quick he was on his feet close to the basket, he commented that he "moves like a cat". Since then, we have always referred to him as "The CAT". During games, when he makes a great play. the phrase "The CAT" is often exchanged on our phones' text messages. For me, he will always be "The CAT".

No disrespect to Junior. It's definitely an accomplishment.

Ox was his high school nickname.

I really believe that Buzz should win coach of the year.  You look at the cards he was dealt and he lead the team to a Big East title.  If you look at the competition, their story isn't as good as his.  Who loses top 2 scorers, one who is Big East Player of the Year, picked to finished 7th but wins the conference.  Worst conference loses are Cinci and Nova on the road which aren't bad losses.  His resume stacks up to:

Rick Pitino - Projected to be a great team and finished as expected.  He didn't do anything out of the ordinary to win the coaching award.  he also lost games he should have won which would have won the title outright

Jay Wright - Many people thought he came in late, especially with victories against GU, MU, Syracuse and Louisville but those were at home.  He was 3-6 on the road with two of those wins coming against the two worst teams in the conference.  He also had bad loses on the road.  They finished tied for 7th/8th which isn't spectacular

JTIII - He was picked to finish higher than MU but ended up tied for the championship.  He had a player blow up this year which kept him in it.  Without Otto, I think GT was a .500 team at best.

Ed Cooley - May thought he was a favorite because they are a cellar dweller every year and this year they were competitive.  He finished 9-9 and tied for 9th/10th with only the really bad teams below him.  His best wins were against ND, Cinci and Villanova.  Not that impressive.  They also had a bad loss against DePaul.  I also think they are on the outside of the tourney unless they make a run in the Big East Tournament (win it).  Can't give the coach of the year to someone who doesn't make the tournament.  When Heath won USF at least made the Tourney.

Jim Boeheim - No way.  You have that much talent.  Projected to win and highly ranked and you collapse at the end.  No way

Kevin Ollie - Finished tied for 7th/8th with Jay Wright.  He is a first year coach with a fairly veteran team with Boatright and Napier.  He had a better non-conference than conference.  He has wins again MSU, ND, and Syracuse and bad losses against USF and St. John's.
