Ex-Bear to plead guilty to failing to file tax returns

Former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Chris Zorich plans to plead guilty to four counts of failing to file federal income tax returns over a period of four years, after being charged with misdemeanor federal offenses, the U.S. attorney's office said today.

Charges filed Thursday stem from income Mr. Zorich, 43, allegedly received between 2006 and 2009 totaling $1 million from his Chris Zorich Foundation, a Chicago law firm and the University of Notre Dame, according to court documents.

The foundation had been paying Mr. Zorich $3,000 per month for property rental, according to the charges, which allege that those payments continued between 2006 and 2009 even though the foundation's 2004 registration with the Illinois attorney general's office was canceled for failing to submit a 2002 annual report. That made the foundation ineligible to solicit, receive or hold funds in Illinois.

In August, Mr. Zorich was ordered by the IRS to pay back almost $350,000 in funds that were unaccounted for at the Zorich Foundation, a nonprofit designed to help disadvantaged families in the Chicago area and provide scholarships for students to attend Notre Dame, Mr. Zorich's alma mater.

That order ended a two-year review by the Illinois attorney general's office, which was initiated after a 2010 Chicago Tribune report saying the charity had bank statements that were unaccounted for.

The Tribune reported in August that Mr. Zorich would begin making payments on the debt from deferred compensation from his six years in the NFL.

Failure to file a federal income tax return is a federal misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine on each count.

I hate Notre Lame, but actually give Zorich some benefit of doubt.

Zorich never pretended he thought he was going to be a HOF linebacker, and was focused on his charity from the day he entered the NFL.  He used to say his life dream was to run an orphanage.
