.......in terms of athletic department expenses according to this list from the midmajority

http://www.midmajority.com/info.php?a=schools-budget

Per Dick Weiss' blog, SJU has the highest budget for a non-D1 football university -- spending $5M more per year than MU (which spends more than DPU, PC and others)

Even more telling though, if you dig down to the team page, were #6 (of 331) in mens BBall expenses topped only by Virginia ($22MM???), MSU, Texas Tech, Duke, and Alabama.  Somehow Kentucky is only #8 - that ought to make their fans furious  :P

Some probably have a problem with MU spending so much of their budget on hoops - but I think it's great - especially with all the good stuff happening!

Imagine what SJU alums must be thinking about their spend!

I would guess that UVA's expense might have included some of JPJ Arena funding? Perhaps the Gillen buyout (that was only $2 million though).

I, for one, have absolutely no problem with spending a ton on hoops.  It shows recruits we're committed to being a top program, and we're putting our money where our mouth is.

Also, the more exposure and success our hoops program gets, the more applicants we get, the more selctive we can be, the higher our academic rankings get, the more our degree is worth.

It's money well spent no matter how you look at it.

Keep in mind the number of sports as well.  MU has the Division I minimum of 14 sports so their per sport spend might be higher than say someone spending $22million while fielding 20 sports

But the $22MM UVA number was *just* for hoops! Their overall budget was #2 on the list at $92MM.

Knight Commission

This is the first (and perhaps last time) I will ever say this....and as painful it is to say this....but I believe the decision to eliminate the football program, and to allocate resources to basketball, was a good decision.

Also, it is a shame though, that like mlb, that there is a directional relationship in spend vs success. It makes our recent success a little tarnished.
