They guy has a negative  connotation to every post during the games. I've noticed it a few times and decided to look back at the conference games to see what he wrote. Note that they were leading at the half in every game, they were dogs in 2 of them.

Seton Hall - At the half: A little sluggish at home again : This seems to be a habit for Marquette.

Pitt - Marquette hanging tough: Literally

G'Town - At the half: Can't buy a basket: Marquette is shooting 30.3% at the half.

UCONN - MU at the half: Defense is optional: Marquette is shooting 65.2%.

They lead at half at it's considering "hanging tough"? Even when Marquette shoots 63% he takes a cheap shot at the defense, they gave up 27 points. Some titles when they win: Marquette hangs on again, Marquette wins in OT, Marquette hangs on against Georgetown (he likes the "hangs on"), Marquette beats Pitt in OT, wins first road game. Can't we get a beat writer that is, at the very least, a casual fan of Marquette?

ZiggysFryBoy

the game takes away from him playing words with friends and bedazzled on his laptop.

And SportsCenter didn't lead with the game either.  I guess EVERYONE hates us.

That's great Lens. I don't expect Sportscenter to play highlights, but I do expect the hometown newspaper to have a positive report on a surprising 4-0 team in the big east.

How dare Hunt deal in facts. This type of complaint is typical in college athletics, but we should count ourselves fortunate that MU is not covered by a cheerleader. No, we do not want "a casual fan" covering this team. We want an experienced reporter who tells us what is happening with this team, good and bad. You have to admit, all these issues mentioned about Marquette are legitimate concerns. This is not a dominating team. It is one with serious flaws, but one that so far in conference play has managed to overcome them. I, for one, don't want someone waiving pompons in my face when I read about this team.

I'd like to add "The Journal Sentinel Hates Us" to the following list of tired MU Scoop topics:
1. Why can't we recruit a big?
2. We would never lose a game if we played a harder non-conference schedule
3. "I'm not blaming the refs, but they are the reason we lost."

In comparison to the lack of reporting we had last year, Michael Hunt has had a ton of content about the team.

Most beat writers are casual fans of the team, and I don't think leading at the half in which you're 10 point dogs is hanging tough. Dogs at home while leading a ranked Georgtown team and it's "can't buy a bucket"?

Seton Hall - At the half: A little sluggish at home again : This seems to be a habit for Marquette.  I don't know if it is a habit, certainly not every game, but even Buzz properly says this team is ugly as hell and wins ugly.  We play some ugly (but effective) basketball, and at times looks like we're moving in molasses.

Pitt - Marquette hanging tough: Literally  How is this negative?  Hanging tough because we weren't supposed to win that game and had a surprise halftime lead, rather than being down 5 to 10 points

G'Town - At the half: Can't buy a basket: Marquette is shooting 30.3% at the half. Factual

UCONN - MU at the half: Defense is optional: Marquette is shooting 65.2%.    Factual

Unrelated but related.

How in the world did Myron Medcalf's completely biased coverage of the gophers in the Star Tribune land him a leading job covering Mens basketball at ESPN? There wasn't a game or player he didn't like and Minn was always one of the best teams in the conf even if they didn't have the record to back it up.

I think it is funny when one of the local high school teams is something like 2-13 and the paper writes nothing but positive stuff about them.

It really isn't all that informative however, and I don't expect a college basketball beat writer to be doing the same thing.

If you are looking for super-duper news on Marquette, I suggest you start writing one so that the bias is consistent. Otherwise, what about Hunt's posts there are inaccurate? This team is #25, but it's also not that good. They are deep, but they don't have nearly the talent they've had the past three years. They are scrappy, tough, and winning. But, they aren't pretty and Hunt is - correctly - pointing that out.

Missing the point, didn't say anything on accuracy. It's not like Marquette is playing poorly. I don't care how they win, Wisconsin wins this way every year and they're lauded for it. I don't consider "hanging tough" leading a game. When I hear hanging tough vs. a major favorite I think down 4-6 points, they were up 1. When I hear sluggish against a 9 point dog I think game must be tied, they were up 9 at half. Sure you could say they were sluggish or hanging tough, but you could also say MU builds halftime lead despite sluggish start or Marquette outmuscles Pitt for halftime lead. Not a big deal, just an observation. I don't think he's neutral, I think he leans toward the negative.

There's enough homer bias from the radio crew and certainly from many folks here. Why need any more from the city newspaper?

Hunt isn't totally wrong. A case can be made that one possession different and MU loses three of those four games. So, quite literally, MU is kinda sorta maybe "hanging" in there.

We have played one great team so far this season - Florida. Did you watch that game? They are a NC contender. Pitt isnt very good and they played without Woodall for most of the game. Seton Hall dressed 8 players. Last night's game should have been an opportunity for our walk-ons to get some run.. It shouldnt have been close....especially at home. I guess I was fairly negative about the team both during and after the game....just as Mike Hunt apparently is (I dont read JS articles but I cant ignore posts from people that bitch about him and the paper's coverage of the team). If you want to ignore what Buzz says about this year's team....and ignore what you are watching when you see the team play and pretend that we have a Final Four caliber team this year then I think you should keep your head buried in the sand throughout the remainder of the season. I guess the Florida game didnt show you where this team is relative to a true contender. Its not as though I am going to stop rooting for the team but I also prefer to be a realist...as does Buzz...as does Mike Hunt.

They are? Since when?
I think people sometimes confuse a lack of cheerleading (which isn't the beat writer's job) with anti-Marquette bias.

I love how everyone looks to the Florida game to decide the future success of this team.  Last year we got blown out by Vanderbilt at home, and I'd say we were contenders in the NCAA tournament last year.  One game does not define the success of a team.  Granted they are struggling offensively, but I think we expect the run and gun type of team we've had in the past, and that is not this team.

ZiggysFryBoy

we could have Poky on our beat and posting here.

BTW, I will point out that I would rather have the local beat guy be critical than dealing with a press that blatantly ignored the red flags around Te'o.

Hunt's coverage is solid, at least he covers us, which is worth something. Hunt has a style of writing and has always given out backhanded compliments at best in lieu of complimenting anyone. His usual writing style is a bit of a negative world weary tone with a sarcastic/negative slant.

If you read any of his stuff when he did the sports editorial for the JS, you'd know what type of coverage to expect.  It will not be positive fluff stuff.

When I heard he was going to be our beat writer, I figured we'd get no coverage or really negative coverage.  So far, I have been happy with his coverage.  Not much ground breaking stuff, but he has been pretty solid.  And he has not been as negative as I had feared. He hasn't gone out of his way to drudge up negatives, that is for sure.  Is he positive, no.  Does he become a bit negative for covering college kids (e.g. Mayo)?  Yes, in my opinion. But overall I'll take his coverage and call it fair.
