Buzz on Bielema

Normally, when a coach has press conference to talk about a big game -  in this case, Marquette vs. Wisconsin on Saturday - he doesn't like to  entertain off-the-subject questions.

Mike Hunt---we are all well aware of the results of the FLA game.  This is at least the 4th post that you have posted here--there maybe more not sure.  Did you go to the Don Walker school of continuation of the negative?  Maybe next time you could slide in that TJ Taylor was only on campus for two weeks before he left........TWO WEEKS.

And has to call in every favor to get a job that he can get, that he can win at and he’s got an $8 million buyout. Well, how did he get that job? He got that job because Todd Graham left. Where did Todd Graham come from? Well, he was at Rice for a year, Tulsa for two years, Pitt for a year and then he went to Arizona State.

Buzz wasn't kidding about following all coaches.  Todd Graham himself probably can't remember a history that eventful.

Then, when you get one, can you win? Because if you don’t win, you’re never getting another one.

Just hope Buzz remembers a certain coach who coached one season, didn't win, and left, but was given another one and that hopefully that certain coach can remain grateful to the institution even if the administration has changed.

Buzz will recite the first game at Navarro and if you asked him I would guess he would say it is still relevant........but getting back to the point--the thrashing, the beatdown, the historic loss at the hands of the Gators.....man. Mike Hunt will refer to this game throughout the season, not solely because we happened to have the next team on the schedule to forget about the last.

I love the fact that it too Bielema leaving to have Badger fans realize UW Football was not a destination job and that they have virtually 0% chance of winning a National Championship.  Classic.

bielema was pretty candid on Mike and Mike this morning. Basically said he was frustrated with the fact that Wisconsin wouldnt increase salaries for assitants to the levels that the SEC schools do. he was tired of losing coordinators/coaches to similar positions simply becuase UW wouldnt pay.

Interesting.  Hope Buzz takes note on this if he indeed does follow it all.  MU backed up the Brinks truck to snag Buzz' most coveted assistant Isaac Chew from a Big 10 school.

Ummm they were a few hail mary's away from being a top 5 ranked team last year. That's like saying MU has virtually a 0% chance of winning a National Championship. Not quite sure what you are getting at?

They had their chance after winning the Russell Wilson lottery.  Even then, Bielema's teams found a way to lose 3 games that year they should not have lost.

The Russell Wilson lottery win will not happen again.   Bielema can not recruit QB's.  He had a zero chance of winning a National title at Wisconsin (given the game coach and recruiter he is, I would say hew has 0.1% chance at Arkansas).   A different coach at Wisconsin (say Petersen of Boise St), I would give a 2.5% chance of winning at a National title at Wisc.

There really is a different mentality down here in the South on how much you pay a coach - good or bad.  The country could use a lot more Midwestern frugality in general - actually having money to pay for things before you buy them.  Still, there certainly are cases where even just on the ledger it makes sense to spend.  Certainly the hated Nick Saban is one - you pay a few million in what is termed "outrageous" money, and then there was some stat in his second year that Alabama football was netting $60 million-plus more a year than they were before the hire.

Obviously we will never make the money Alabama football did, but in general I believe we've had two straight presidents here that understand that basketball in general - and the salaries paid to Buzz and yes Tom Crean - have been a great investment that has led to 20,000 applications a year to the school through tremendous exposure in the Northeast and elsewhere.

The Big East situation will hurt, but even in a worst case the chance to compete so well in the Golden Era of the Big East has put Marquette back in the national spotlight behind only the Kentucky-Indiana-Kansas-Duke-UNC types.

With the level we could reach next year I believe we might keep Buzz for a long time, but if not we certainly are at a level where a lot of very good coaches will want this job.
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).
