Automatic chant
« on: November 11, 2012, 05:05:19 PM »
I thought this was mentioned last year, but I thought and inside source had requested that the student section stop chanting "automatic" when Davente was shooting free throws. I think we are the only student section in the country that makes noise when our own team is at the line.

The student section was in mid season form--they were rockin to start the game. Unfortunately, some players looked to be in mid season form as well. Jamil flashing the 'hang loose' hands after his 3s was awesome.

Yea, before the game on the screen Davante was talking about his favorite part of the student section and he said it was the automatic chant.

Yup. Can't fault the students at all. Davante called for it, and considering that after missing the first FT he finished 4/5 from the line, you can't fault DG for calling for the automatic chant either. If he hits 80% all year long, chant away.

Are all of you just oblivious to the fact that Davante called for it himself? Im not a fan but Davante himself wants the chant.

It's a stupid chant but if it supports the players...why not?

Not a big fan of the chant, but if DG wants it, give it to him.

In any event, I have to admit that the hushed version of the chant in the second half was pretty cool.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I'd prefer a chant of "I Be Chillin".. or "You Be Chillin" when Big Sheesh is at the line. Maybe even a big "DOE!!!!!!!" if the FT is made.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

If a 75.6 career free-throw shooter is "automatic," what are Ray Allen, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki?

Basically, the chant is both stupid and inaccurate.

Davante is Marquette's center. That's the difference.

It's a chant moron, get over yourself.  Davante already said he likes it, what's the big deal to all you old curmudgeons?  Games are supposed to be fun, if you want to go to every Heat, Lakers, and Mavs game and chant "AUTOMATIC" every time one of those guys shoots a free throw, be my guest.  And to say that it's distracting to a player to hear a chant during a free throw is beyond absurd.  D Rose and LeBron hear "MVP" chants every time they go to the line.  Go back to sitting on your hands during the game and let the drunk students do what they want.

If Davante wants it, give it to him.

The chant.
The ball on the block.
The open three.
The Gilbert Whopper.
Your mom.

Just give it to him.

Nice to see our level of discourse is quickly reduced to name-calling. Not sure what I said in my post to merit this, so I'll just attribute your vitriol to lingering feelings of anger following Bama's loss.

Speaking of chants and being a curmudgeon, the students still going with the generic "I believe that we will win" chant was an unwelcome surprise.

The student section was given instructions for what they should chant.

I'm assuming the guys were upperclassmen that have taken the lead for the section. I'd rather have a well-organized, passionate section even with a few borrowed chants (like We Believe) than a student section that has no impact on the game and seems little more into it than the upper bowl.

They had control of the PA system about 45 minutes before tip-off and explained to all the students how things were going to go. Excellent primer for freshmen, but probably good for the seniors as well. If the free throw disparity between the first and second half keeps up at half that rate, they can do whatever they want.
