Hi all,

As you can see from my number of posts I'm new to the board. My question is why do I not see nearly the number of conversations on the board about JaJuan Johnson compared to Nunn? JaJuan is only a few spots below Nunn on all the recruiting sites. Why were we so high on Nunn and so quiet about JaJaun?

Let me know, thanks

GGGG

Honestly I think it's because people don't know what to think with the Dawson commitment and the continued recruitment of Embiid.  Assuming Otule returns, if we manage to get both we will be two over if no one leaves and everyone shows.

Don't get me wrong I love Buzz, I even wrote coach a letter asking him to stay when we all put our tin foil hats on. But has Buzz ever had a year where everyone cameback/?showed up?

We got a player (Steve Taylor) out of Nunn's HS (Simeon) who was a year before Nunn.  We were considered the favorites to get Nunn for what? 6 or 8 months before he made his commitment.  No one really thought that MU for a serious challenger for JaJuan (probably because we all thought that we were getting Nunn) until recently.  I really think that JaJuan's recruitment has been much more under the radar, in general.  Add it all up, and you get less threads about JaJuan Johnson.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

goldeneagle91114

That makes sense, what's our feelings on JaJuan, if we land him will people be as excited as if we would have landed Nunn?

I can't speak for everyone, but I definitely will be.  He's a great player with a long wingspan who fits the definition of a "switchable" player that Buzz covets much more so than Nunn did.  He's a versatile scorer as well.

I agree he is a great switchable type player. I would be super excited if we landed him. Is he a pure shooter though? I feel like besides for Mayo we don't have much of a shooter from behind the arc, and Mayo was inconsistent last year as a freshman

No, not yet.

The Dawson commit changed things. I think if we hadn't taken that commit, you'd hear a lot more about Johnson. But despite being the supposed favorite for Johnson, the question is where he fits in. In addition, I think there's a lot more hope for Embiid, who seems to fit a bigger need and is maybe the biggest "It guy" recruit in the country right now.

Does taking Johnson indicate we won't still pursue Embiid, or that Dawson won't be coming, or that someone won't be back in 2013-14? Personally, I'm okay with over signing, but quite a few take issue with it and the idea of a Johnson commit seems to provide more questions than answers.

These are 2013-14 guys correct? What does Otule returning this year impact our scholarship situation for next year?

GGGG

The question is whether or not he will be granted a sixth year.  If he is granted a sixth year for 2013-14, we are full now if everyone here stays and everyone that is supposed to be here shows up.  If Buzz accepts a commitment from Johnson and/or Embiid, that means someone isn't going to be here whom we are expecting.

GGGG

And interestingly, Otule is labelled as a redshirt senior on the official roster.

Totally forgot about the potential 6th year.  If Otule is granted a 6th year and he takes them up on the offer, I say we expand the scholarship table to allow people to see all 6 years Otule was on the team.  The fact he was on the team with Dominic Jerel and Wes is kinda crazy.

We're talking about Otule returning in 2013-14. Here's a look at Chris' career thus far:

2008-09: Freshman year, 9 appearances
2009-10: Redshirt Freshman year, 3 appearances, granted effective medical redshirt
2010-11: Sophomore year, 37 appearances, only full season
2011-12: Junior year, 8 appearances
2012-13: Senior year
2013-14: Super-Senior year?

Usually a player is given 5 years to complete 4 seasons of eligibility. Because Otule played in fewer than 25% of Marquette's games in 2011-12, Otule is eligible to apply for a 6th year, effectively turning his 2011-12 Junior season into another redshirt year. If granted the waiver, which Buzz seems to think he would based on interviews, Otule would be allowed to play a second Senior season in 2013-14. As I believe Otule is already working on his masters, I have no doubt he would want to stay for a 6th season given the opportunity, and I find it very hard to believe that Buzz wouldn't want a 6th year senior center that is a defensive specialist if he was available, especially considering the relationship they have already built.

GGGG

I find it inconceivable that if Otule wants to be here for a sixth year that Buzz wouldn't be completely supportive.

+1. There's zero chance Buzz doesn't give Chris the 6th year 'chance'. The kid is pretty much the face of the athletic department right now.

Seems like it's down to Miami, Alabama, and Marquette. Considering he's visited the other two without a commitment, I like our odds, though I still think Embiid fills a more important need.

goldeneagle91114

who fills a bigger need, JaJuan or Embiid? How many years does McKay have?

Embiid is a seven-footer, so that's always a need.

brewcity77

In my opinion, Embiid. Here's a look at the outlook of both positions if these players don't come:

2/3 Switchable: In 2013-14, Blue and Mayo would be the likely starters. We'd be undersized, but would have Juan Anderson, Jamal Ferguson, Steve Taylor, Deonte Burton, and John Dawson scattered throughout subsequent classes to replace them. Even with graduation, with Anderson, Taylor, and Burton, we have at least one top-100 guy in that wing role in the three classes after Blue graduates.

Center: Assuming he returns for a sixth year, Otule will graduate in 2014 along with Gardner. That leaves a hole at center. McKay would most likely be forced to move to center with Taylor playing the 4, probably spelled by undersized guys like Burton and Ferguson. Not only would not having Embiid leave us with virtually no center depth, it would also hurt our wing player depth as natural wings would have to play the 4 and possibly even the 5 at times out of position.

bilsu

I think the question is irrelevant, because I believe Buzz will take both if he can get both.

4everwarriors

You can just see it. Johnson is a late bloomer who is just going to explode on the college scene.

Agree.  Plus who would host all the cool videos if Chris left?
