Great news! Any idea how good his odds are of making the team?

Is this a guaranteed contract?

Nope. Jerel is guaranteed nothing.

This is routine business in the NBA. Teams invite lots of players to camp to provide depth for workouts. Every once in a blue moon, a player impresses enough to make a team, as Matthews did.

Unfortunately for Jerel, he is a classic tweener guard: not a good enough handle or passing ability to play the 1, too short and not a sweet enough 3-point stroke to play the 2.

Yet another example of a great college player who isn't quite good enough for the NBA. There's no shame in that, and there's money to be made overseas.

Well, that's all a player can ask for.  Just play your ass off and try to make a roster.

Refresh my memory--didn't some expert on winning, whose mouth was wide open, claim that playing overseas is for losers, and is the equivalent of bagging groceries?

This just looks like the general comments that have always been there for Jerel.  Does anyone know anything specifically about the Raptors roster situation?  How deep are they at guard?  What are his chances of catching on at the end of the bench?

lab_warrior

Guards listed currently on Raptors' roster:

DeMar DeRozan,  Landry Fields,  Jose Calderon, Kyle Lowry, John Lucas III, Terrence Ross, Ben Uzoh.

Not exactly a list of Hall of Famers. Jerel probably won't get a better chance.

lab_warrior

Agreed.  Jerel has a pretty damn good shot.

The only players on that list that make me want to buy a ticket would be DeRozan (spectacular dunking ability) and Terrence Ross (I think we all saw how absurd that 360 alley oop was against us in MSG.)  Then again, I'd be buying a ticket to watch the Raptors.  Guh.

I think we have different definition of damn good shot.
He would have to beat out guys they already invested in through money or draft picks
Jose Manuel Calderon $10,561,985
Kyle Lowry $5,750,000 $6,210,000
Landry Fields $5,000,000 $5,225,000 $8,500,000
DeMar DeRozan $3,344,250 $4,531,458
Terrence Ross $2,563,320 $2,678,640
John Lucas $1,500,000 $1,567,500
Quincy Acy 2nd round pick
Who do the Raptors cut?

And beat out other training camp signees in dominique mcguire and chris wright who have both previously made NBA rosters.

Yeah, may not be a list of household names, but they're good enough that Jerel's chances are less than 1%.

These signings put them at 18 players total I believe, and only 15 can be on a team. Fields, DeRozan, Lowry, Ross, and Calderon are all guaranteed to be on the roster. Lucas is living off of that one amazing summer league he had a year or two ago, and I don't even know who Uzoh is. Jerel will have to work his butt off to get past the preseason (if he even gets there) and make the team as a 3rd string pg/sg. I really hope he does but the chances are slim.

Well of course he's somewhat of a longshot - the guy has been out of college for three years and hasn't played one minute in the NBA. That said, this is his best (last?) shot.

MU82

He is more than somewhat of a longshot. He is an extreme longshot. I hope he beats the odds, but his size and skill set are working against him.

I'd say he about 8 or 10 -1, somewhat of a longshot. Maybe you're right and he's an EXTREME longshot, like 80 or 100 - 1. Either way, it may be his last, best shot.

MU82

Fair enough, Lenny. Now that I re-read my last comment, it was a silly, semantic quibble.

I don't know, that less than 1 percent finding has me worried.

mu_hilltopper

Jerel got in for 6 minutes last night.

MUfan12

Does anyone know if Buycks latched on anywhere for camp? He had a nice summer, but I don't remember hearing about an invite.
