I tweeted at Broeker asking if Wade leaving would affect our relationship with Jordan and he replied saying he has "no reason to believe so"

Thank god.

If Jordan is paying a competitive rate, then MU should keep Jordan.

If X company offers a substantial amount more, MU should go with that brand.

It's just like Nascar.

Totally agree.  Jordan brand clicks with recruits, but brand new facilities speak louder.

I can envision Li-Ning making a big push for MU.  They can't think the have the ability to get significant Miami Heat branding.  This will be where LW earns his stripes.  The check would need to be absolutely huge. But it is not out of the question.  Remember, Airtran will shortly be on the way out as a primary sponsor.

mu_hilltopper

So .. what kind of coin does a school get from a brand?

jsglow

Great question hilltopper.  I'd imagine those teams that regularly play in the national spotlight command a higher sponsorship price.  No doubt it cost more to the 'the official whatever' at Kentucky is night and day higher than at Illinois.  I suspect MU can do reasonably well.  Wonder what Seganiak (sp?) pays to get his name mentioned by Homer 20 times a game.

mu_hilltopper

Are we thinking $50k?  $100k?  $500k?  I have no idea.

Sadly, Chico's is actually the guy who could probably help with this one.

I can say that right now MU is not on the Li-Ning's radar because they are trying to capture the big name athlete.  Right now DWade is that guy but it will probably be awhile before they go after a college team. They will be putting together the DWade brand so that alone will push out the time with which MU could even come onboard.

Li-Ning is pretty young in the US but they do make a really nice track jacket.

If we do go Li-Ning, do we get a pipeline to Chinese talent? Imagine the exposure and possible sponsorships? Picture the economic links tat could be built between Milwaukee and WI with China!

Completely Disagree.  Jordan is a big reason why many recruits choose schools.  It sounds petty but it is true.  In fact Trent Lockett tweeted earlier saying that.  "This could hurt the gear situation"

Nope.

Cal is sponsored by Jordan. How is that going? How about North Carolina A&T?

Branding and sponsorship are important, but keep it in perspective.

If Jordan Brand is paying a competitive rate, MU should stick with Jordan. It's a good brand.

But, if (insert brand) pays way more and allows MU to buy a private jet for the team (theoretically), MU should take the jet and run.

One clarification here. Only four schools are actually sponsored by Jordan (MU, Cal, Georgetown, UNC). Others may wear Jordan unis but that does not mean they are sponsored. I believe this is elite company that on it's own may not be enough to draw recruits in, but does expand the MU brand more than a generic Adidas or Nike sponsorship would.

Stupid Wikipedia.

Anyways, I like Jordan brand, it's a great opportunity for MU.

But, it's not the holy grail of recruiting. MU has a lot of expenses to cover, and if they can get substantially more from another brand (I don't know if they can), they should take it.

That's all I'm saying.

Does Li-Ning translate to LA Gear?

Maybe it will help us get that kid in the Jordan commercial from China

MU82

Just wondering how much the new brand will pay me to wear their shoes.

Think about it: We willingly pay to be billboards for Nike, Polo, Levi's, whatever. What a deal for all these companies!

OK. End of rant. Sorry.

Obviously it is not the holy grail, but shoe company has been a deciding factor in many of athletes recruitment.  You might as well stick with the hottest brand.

Very true. Quite a few of the AAU program sponsorships end up carrying through to the college program. Shabazz Muhammad reportedly picked UCLA over Kentucky out of loyalty to adidas.
