My view exactly.  His time later at Ball State paved the way and allowed him to become one of the great coaches of the last 20 years and a perfect fit for a school like Utah or later SLU where the spotlight was not so bright.

The crazy thing is that Buzz was only one year older than Rick when they got their Marquette head coaching jobs. Rick needed to fail before he could succeed elsewhere. Next to Hank, Rick won more games than any other *coach* in Marquette's history. Is over .700 as a head coach career wise, been to three F2's as an assistant or head coach.  His only losing season was two years ago at SLU when he had to kick a number of players off the team for bad behavior. May be the best analytical mind in the game.  I agree with the Equalizer/84: Definitely a HOFamer.

43 years ago I worked side by side with Rick at a factory for the summer. Some nights, upon his invite, I'd head down to DeSales to watch the counselors from basketball camp in pick up games. To this day, he knows my name, knows what I do, and remembers our summer grunt job. Man, there are some stories to tell. But, one thing was always a constant. Rick could pack it away and when you're fightin' the gene pool, its time to make a lifestyle change. Gym rat, personified, that's Rick in a nutshell.

I had the luxury of having Rick and his Dad come to my house every free Saturday night he had during the season to utilize our cable TV. We lived in Tosa and Rick in Milwaukee and tosa got cable first. I remember with great memories Rick and Ray stopping buy to watch long beach st play San Diego state or whoever. Seeing him and ray stuffed from a big meal and still enjoying a late evening barbiere's pizza and garlic breads will always be great memories.

Rick is one of my all time favorites and thankful to a lifetime of knowing him.

Several years ago I was staying at the Pfister while up for an MU game.  Rick was living in the Pfister and working as a TV commentator.  I got on the elevator early one mornning to walk over to the Starbucks in Red Arrow Park.  Rick was on his way down too.  I introduced myself as a fellow class of '70.  He was on his way to the MAC so we walked together talking about MU and how he would be doing NCAA Tourney in St. Louis, where I live.  As we got to the MAC he said, "where you going"?   I said, the Starbucks.  His reply:  "Hey, do you need to use my car?"  Good guy.  Lot of McGuire in him.   His been a great addition for SLU bball.

Goose, I remember walking into Barbiere's and seeing Rick with a large pizza in front of him.  He took the top off the salt shaker and proceeded to dash the entire contents of that salt shaker onto his pizza.  I knew then that heart problems were in his forecast.
