Rounding out the 2013 class: Point guard

Written by: Mark Strotman

Before the 2012 season begins, Paint Touches will look at how Buzz Williams and Marquette can finish their 2013 recruiting class. As it stands, Marquette has one open scholarship for the class. If Chris Otule does not return for a ... Continue reading →

Again, excellent work Strotty.  While I know you'll spend time on other positions in future articles, I'd be interested in your thoughts about a possible juco PG joining the '13 class.  Might that depend some on DWilson's progress this year?  Or might Buzz consider Vander as a possible full time #1 during his senior year, seemingly his most plausible path to the pros?

Frankly that'll be a real area of interest for me this year.  Namely, how well MU flows offensively when JC isn't on the floor.  I personally hope I see good things out of Blue in that position.

Barring a radical improvement in his shot, Vander's best (only?) shot at the NBA is at the point.

The same went for Jerel McNeal, but he played the 2 at Marquette. Of course, Dominic James was locked in at PG and Buzz wasn't going to change him his senior year, but Buzz wants to get the most of his guys as it stands at Marquette. He's not going to sacrifice Marquette's success (by moving Vander to the point) to get a player to the pros. Yes, he wants to get these guys to the NBA. But he also wants success at Marquette. Putting Vander at the point takes him out of his role as the "3" in MU's offense, where he has thrived the last two years. I don't see that changing.

In the article, it spoke breifly about the possibility of Otule returning for a sixth year.

Is that still contingent, in part, on the NCAA deeming last year to be a red shirt year?

Or, have they already ruled on that, and it's now  up to Chris to decide if he wants to be a super super super senior?

I could see Vander moving to the 1 and it being for the good of the team. Clearly he won't play a 4-5 role, and with Gardner, Jamil, McKay, Taylor, and most likely Otule all in the mix, we're fine there. ST will also probably play some 3, and with Juan, Mayo, Ferguson, and Burton all best suited at the 2-3 spots, sliding Vander over might maximize our talent on the floor, especially if Nunn is also in the mix.

Unless one of the DWs is ready to start, or we add a transfer, I don't see how it's not Blue, even if he's playing more of a point-forward role with 2 other 2-3 switchables.

He cannot officially apply for a sixth year until he uses up all of his eligibility.  It seems as though we are making the assumption that he would qualify and that Buzz and Co did their groundwork to see if that is a possibility.

Chris Jones would be interesting, but it has been said that Nunn is our number one priority, which leads me to believe that Buzz believes our PG situation will be fine.

I for one think Derrick Wilson is better than people are giving him credit for.  I know he was hurt, but Cadougan made huge strides from his freshman to sophomore year when he shared the role with Buycks, and made another huge step into his junior year as the full time starter.  As this season gets rolling, I would like to see how he looks though.

Agree completely.  He played his role last year, and that role had nothing to so with scoring.  His role this year will likely be similar, so not sure if we'll see much improvement in terms of scoring but I think he's capable.

I am of the opinion that if Chris Otule has an injury free season that he will be back for a 6th.  If he has another season ending injury that they will simply call it quits.
