Good call Navin.

Yeah, MU is using him, and vice versa. That's just the way it is these days. Considering hoops is the biggest (only) real high profile sport at MU, if Crean donates this quietly, nobody notices.

So to the Chicos out there, I see the criticism and possibly Crean's selfish side. On the other hand, MU knows that if they hold this presser, it gets their soccer program more coverage and it needs all the help it can get.

Wow ... this may be the first time in human history that a charitable donation of $100,000 has been greeted with the characterization of the donor as "selfish".

Some of you guys are just too funny.

I haven't seen anybody on this board say it isn't extremely generous. It's the motivation for holding a press conference that people have questioned.

I would think that calling a person "selfish" after he makes a $100,000 donation excludes any suggestion of generosity. The two concepts don't exactly jibe. The theory, it seems, is that TC spent $100K for the privilege of holding a self-aggrandizing press conference. If that's the case, he certainly did not make the donation out of any sense of generosity.

As for motivation, it seems obvious: boosting the fund drive. The strategy of using a high-profile donor to drum up support for a campaign of this sort is hardly novel, and it does not make that donor suspect or selfish.

The real issue here is that some - and you in particular - have personal issues with Tom Crean. As a result some continue to find nefarious motives in anything he does, and even some things he doesn't (i.e. your conspiracy theory that he was the man on the grassy knoll during the "Gold" nickname debacle).
To each their own, I suppose.

How many of us here think that if Crean donates to the stadium that it doesn't get some press though. I mean he's an employee of the university, who really gives money back to their employer, regardless of you love and respect for that employer. This is a big deal. And who's really to say that TC called the conference, for all we know it was the AD who wanted to make a it a PR event?

I think a MUSCOOP donation pool is a good idea.

I'm just not sure that Crean was the guy saying "I just gave 100 grand, can we hold a presser for that?"...

I guess it's possible, but I don't know if that's the most likely scenario.

More likely is the fact that the Crean's were asked to donate, they came back with a generous offer... and now MU is using that generous offer to promote the new stadium.

Doesn't that seem like the most plausible solution?

I think a MUSCOOP donation pool is a good idea.

I can set that up easily if enough are interested.  The only catch is, for us to accept the donation we'd have to go through a provider that would charge about 5% for each transaction.  So the final amount going to MU would be ~5% less than the amount we received.

Kudos to Crean for a kind and generous gesture.

It's sad that a $100,000 donation could be looked on as a PR stunt. Does TC like to be in front of the cameras? Yeah. So did Al.

Um .. no.

It was about the soccer stadium.

Unfortunately Hilltopper, you are incorrect. Calling a press conference for this had nothing to do with the soccer stadium or Marquette, for that matter.

A very nice gesture, but come on. Why does the media even need to know about it? I continue to be amazed.

Grow up PRN. Man up and shut the F up for once.

I was going to bash the Crean bashers, but decided to keep quiet since I didn't even see the darn thing.  Never mind.

Man up? I am not familiar with this term. Can a virile stud such as yourself please translate for me?

It's as if some other group of people that hated MU posted many posts in this thread.  Some really pathetic posts and posters on these boards.

There is more to Marquette than Men's basketball.  And the purpose was to raise funds for an MU sport, and a nice donation from another sport's coach to help with the fund raising.

Lots of trolls on the MU boards.  Lots.

perception vs. reality.  Reread the thread and tell me how many posters and posts you consider "pathetic".  I count one, maybe two who hold a negative opinion of the press conference.  The rest thought it was positive.

This is the same PR department that said Koonce helped lead the Packers back to "DOMINANCE" the other day.

Need I say more.   ;D

Nice gesture by the Creans, certainly a good story, but it can be (and was) interpreted differently by some people (not surprisingly).

These are the types of things that only strengthen people's views on both sides.  Unfortunately, anytime anyone gives a sum that large it should not be questioned as to the purpose or intent, but in this case some have....unfortunately (and I'm not blaming them for that interpretation, I can totally understand how they came to that conclusion).

I don't see why people do not just donate on their own as opposed to through the site. At least if they do it on their own it goes to their Blue and Gold account and may get them better seats for seasons in years to come...
