Good thing the DOBO doesn't recruit, because that is one thing he couldn't do.

I have to believe recruiting for Marquette is far easier than recruiting for DePaul.  Better facilities, better stadium, and you can move away from home, yet only be 90 miles away from Chicago.  Not to mention being a more successful program this century.

No doubt.  But the guy still couldn't recruit.

In this old scoop thread, everyone had nothing but good things to say about him.  And that's when he was still at DePaul!

Yeah, but remember a lot of MU fans ripped Crean for his recruiting because he could only attract top talent when the playing time was available and not when spots were limited. Wainwright had an ocean of playing time with that awful program and couldn't get it to even a respectable level of competition.

Recruiting is not his strong suit.

There are also old Scoop threads in which people here destroyed the guy not only as a bad recruiter but a terrible coach.  Quite a turnaround now that he is on the staff from some of those same posters.   :o

Two examples on the extremes:

Dr. Blackheart thought he was a good recruiter and good coach, so he should be thrilled by the hire.

Ners thinks he is a terrible coach, he must be disappointed with the hire.

Wonder if it took you 20 seconds to find those quotes like you did in the Ners reference.

Quote from: ChicosBailBonds on May 24, 2010, 05:16:01 PM
Why do you put words in my mouth?  Did I ever say playing at higher levels HINDERS you?  Of course not.  What I DID SAY was that just because one hasn't played at those levels doesn't disqualify them to be successful coaches.  This is why you keep losing me and others with your argument.

Does being a great CEO require you have a MBA?  No.   Does being a great NBA coach require you be a former player?  No.  Is it nice to have?  Sure.  Is it a guarantee of success?  HELL NO.

That is the rub.  Just because you coached at a clinic and played ball doesn't mean you have the market cornered on analysis.  That is all we've been saying.  You want to make it a zero sum argument, which it clearly isn't.

I'm just worried after all your ranting how good Buzz is going to be, considering he didn't play in the NBA or in college.  Should we be worried that Buzz won't have what it takes?

And no, I don't think the 2003-04 team underachieved considering what they lost.  You do, I don't.  Much stronger conference that year, loss of Wade, loss of Jackson, Merritt coming off shoulder surgery and playing a different position, Diener playing hurt, target on our back all year.....ALL OF THOSE THINGS together did not surprise me that we were a NIT team that year.

Finally, on your comments about other coaches.  Despite your denial that you've never said a coach was terrible, etc, you have indeed made such comments:

"they were coached by JERRY WAINWRIGHT who was a TERRRIBLE coach"  January 21, 2010

That took me about 20 seconds to find.  Should I continue?  Of course you've said it about other coaches from time to time as well.  It's ok, in fact in this case you are right.  He did not do a good job at DePaul.  Just don't deny that you have used that terminology in the past because you clearly have.

Awfully knowledgeable about that thread even though you weren't posting back then.

great defensive coach, decent recruiter considering DePaul's programs limitations, friend of MU, Buzz and fan of Al.  Sorry to hear he is not well-hope it doesn't distract him-glad he is closer to home..., Great hire!

great defensive coach,

based on anecdotal evidence or numbers?

Hard to judge him based on the train wreck that is DePaul basketball.

Dr. Blackheart

So I said the essentially same thing then and now.  What is your point about turnaround and extremes when you quoted me?

DePaul is better than they have been in years, so it should be a good game. btw, Wainwright is an assistant at Fresno State. Also has prostrate cancer. He is a very good guy, and loved Al. Actually was a very good recruiter and game coach, but the classroom part killed his teams.

So Scoop sources at In 'n Out are actually accurate?  What ya know?  ;)

Great addition for Buzz. Very experienced head coach, knows Chicago via Dixie Versace and even ties back to Al, actually not a bad recruiter but DU couldn't keep the kids in class or in school. Has cancer and this puts him closer to his home and off the road. Was an Al admirer.

Well, I was judging him based on the numbers-both his Richmond and Wilmington teams were nationally ranked defensively, and were top ten a few times.
Please provide the anecdotes to which you refer.
