Pullens twitter quotes were classic.

"weber didn't think I was good enough to play at Ilinois...and I don't think he's good enough to coach at KState"
The "average fan" is an idiot.

Terrible hire.

What a depressing hire for K-State fans.

I disagree. Weber had a pretty good run with the Illini. It ended with a whimper, but he was up there in terms of career wins with them and he did take them to a National Championship game. Kansas State was a middling program before Martin game so they should be grateful that they got a somewhat high-profile coach to come in. Is it the best hire? No, but certainly not disappointing.

bilsu

You cannot say it is a bad hire, unless you know who their other choices were.
I think he was always hurt by Bill Self's legacy at Illinois and could never really get over the hump at Illinois. He has a new life, which may or may not work well for him.

JTBMU7

not a bad hire on either end. KState gets an experienced coach with a successful track record. Weber gets to go to a place where there is less national attention and pressure to win.

Jury's out....., so what else is new? I'm trying to think of some other coaches whose careers were restarted and successful.  Bruce is joining a darn tough league to compete in.  Tougher than the BIG WHATEVER, I think.

Good landing for Weber.  But, can he recruit at K-State?  K-State has been a burial ground for coaches.  Frank Martin was lucky to hitch his star to Huggins and then have some national recruits.  Weber is not going to do that.

Goose

Weber seems like great guy but think he is much more suited for mid major program. If I were KSU fan I would be very disappointed.

The only thing about Weber taking Illinois to a championship game is he did it with all of Self's recruits so that takes away from it a bit.

KSU fans need to give Bruce Weber FIVE YEARS before they make any judgements!

Yep. I can't wait for a year from now when we can finally start to figure out what kind of job Buzz Williams is doing, as well as what Tom Crean is doing at I4.

BTW, Brad Stevens just finished up his 5th season at Butler. I am starting to think he might be pretty good. Unfortunately, Darrin Horn only got through 4 seasons at USC, so we'll never know if he did a good job or not. I also have no idea how Illinois hired John Groce since he only had 4 years at Ohio. How on earth were they able to judge whether or not he would be a good fit?

MUBurrow

Its a better hire than Doug Gottlieb

I would be a better hire than Doug Gottlieb.

Gottlieb probably couldn't pass the pre-employment credit check.

Nah, stick with your delivery route. Job security is better as long as you don't get lost too often.

Agreed, but collins should have gotten the illinois job. He'd have been a good fit down there.
Overall, I like hiring eager young assistants/mid major coaches over high-major re-treads as a general rule. It seems there's more motivation to build and make a name vs a guy who had success elsewhere and is looking to continue coaching.

brewcity77

Weber is too nice a guy to succeed at the high-major level. I would never want him heading up a program I cheered for. It'll be interesting to see if any of his UI players follow him...he had quite the nice class a year ago.

This post made me laugh.  We all know who you are targeting with this.  If memory serves, he said he waits for 5 years but he also often said something like so far so good.  Some people make up their minds earlier than others.

Weber is a perfect example.  After just two years, how many people would have though Weber would be fired not many years later?  Lavin, Hewitt at Georgia Tech, etc.  The theory I have heard thrown around is pretty sound.  Let a coach go through a full class of his players graduating before you truly make a no holds bar judgment.  Mike Deane was great after three years (a NIT final, two NCAA appearances).  He was fired two years later, in his 5th year.

Strange that you would rush to defend that. Even stranger that you would write it in the third person. Give it up already.
