I'm not saying the last two posts are wrong, they just are examples of what is wrong with how this all gets perceived.  So they went for two guys who had indicated previously they would likely stay put and they chose to stay put - what's the big deal?  This is such an overreaction (by many people, especially the media, and not just the last two posters).

Buried in the Chicago Sun-Times article about Stevens not taking the Illini job:

Other oft-mentioned candidates such as Marquette's Buzz Williams and Alabama's Anthony Grant also are dropping off the radar — if they ever were on it.

"Not going to happen,'' a source said of speculation about Williams, who has little reason to leave Marquette and has had some serious disciplinary problems among his players.

Agreed.

IF they get a guy in there who can win some games, none of this "oh, they look bad for not getting _______" will immediately go away.

Illinois doesn't need a name, they need a guy who is good. Media perception doesn't matter one bit if the guy is good at his job.

Agree.  The guy who will be impacted though is the AD.  He already has publically looked like a fool in his first two most important hires. He settled in his football choice to the point where mid-major assistants didn't want to move to Chambana.  This affects recruiting and fundraising big time, and makes him a target.

Btw, an Illini hoop program in disarray helps MU more than a DePaul one.

If the program(s) struggle, then you are right.

If they win, this will all go away.

It's like Ted Thompson vs Favre. A lot of people thought ted and McCarthy were idiots.

Not so much anymore.

I wonder if this gives Buzz a shot at Jabari? He had been interested at some level regarding Illinois.

Is Brad Stevens African American?

Does this put to rest the rumors here that he is taking over another Big Ten job any day now?   ;D

The effort they put into going for Shaka satisfied the boards request for a minority hire.

The difference here though is he publically has been rejected by not just his top choice for each sport but even by those down the list.  His choices may be right 2 or 3 years down the road.  However, he needs donor money bad right now and a lot is going to buy out coaches not facilities.  And what statement does that make to potential recruiters and their people?

You are correct, there. For the immediate needs/wants of the school, this isn't good.

Brad Stevens has declined the Illini job.

Moving onto their third choice... this is getting ugly for the Illini as every candiate has been public and then publicly declined.

They will end up with someone good and no one will give a chit that the first few guys said no.  No one.

John Groce isn't good.

Why do you say that?  He did pretty well recruiting at Xavier and Ohio State.  He's done well as a head coach at Ohio U.

In my opinion,  hes a good coach.  However, not what Illini fans thought they were in store for.

If Ohio loses to Akron, he isn't even a candidate.
