Twice is coincidence...

Auric Goldfinger said, "Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action." So I was thinking about this yesterday, especially in light of the Deadspin article that came out revealing more information about the Chadima scandal at UW.

We've just seen a story "break" in the Journal-Sentinel about six MU players being in a bar. Imagine the horror...college kids in a bar! Anyway...this is pretty obviously a non-story that was handled internally. Any journalist who thinks this is newsworthy should be taken out to pasture and shot. But nonetheless, the Urinal-Sentinel has manufactured a story out of this...just days before Marquette plays Florida in the Sweet 16. This morning, all I could think was "why 6 weeks later, why right before the Sweet 16 game?" and suddenly I realized I was thinking the exact same thing at this time last year.

Why was it that last year at this exact same time, we suddenly had breaking news about a college party that had taken place months before? Why did it happen right on the verge of the Sweet 16? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that whole scandal broke the exact same week last year, before Marquette's biggest game in 8 years. Now, exactly one year later, the same outlet is releasing a similar delayed scandal story about the same school and same program. Tell me that isn't...peculiar.

I'm not ready to call this a trend, or enemy action just yet, but this is the definition of manufactured journalism, and the timing just smacks of bizarre coincidence. Meanwhile, articles are coming out about what actually happened at the Rose Bowl with UW, and the MUS is silent. Maybe it's nothing, but I can freely admit that I will be paying very close attention to what the MUS is printing about Marquette this week next year, especially if we are preparing for a Sweet 16 game.

MJS has been regularly reporting on chadima and had a story just last week when UW released its report. I think we need to stop the victim mentality here.

To play devil's advocate, but to still account for the coincidence:

It makes more sense to me that local news outlets would wait until Marquette was most relevant (tournament success) before they released some "controversial" non-stories.  This is the time of year that they'll get talked about the most and maybe even picked up by national outlets.

It sucks, but reporters are trying to get money and recognition just like everybody else.  Why not sit on a story for a couple weeks so that it could possibly become a story nationally instead of just something chatted about on fan forums?

Hunt, in his blog, states that the tickets were only recently issued.  Which could mean that the Milwaukee police only issued the tickets after the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel made its request for the police report.  It wouldn't be the first time that a police department covered its ass when an investigation became public.

Regarding timing, it seems, to me anyway, that that would be on whoever tipped off the J-S about the police investigation in late February since they requested the report on February 29th.  While the story is coming out now, in late February the NCAA tournament field wasn't announced and the Big East Tournament had yet to start.

I believe the JS requests all reports at the end of every month. The fact that tickets were issued nearly 2 weeks after that request and 6 weeks after the actual incident does seem odd though, even Buzz said as much.

If it bleeds it leads. Journalists, like lawyers, are parasites. We can't really expect them to pass up a story that will get lots of clickthroughs on their website can we? I expect no better from a journalist than I do from an ambulance chasing attorney.

I am willing to wager, large sums of $$$ that somehow, someway, in some walk of life, there is a Badger fan/MU hater behind this. Might not be your "average Joe fan", but someone in a "higher up" position that bleeds red and hates MU. And people wonder why some of us absolutely cannot stand UW??

Did you see the J/S this morning? Buzz realizes there is an agenda. Theirs some kind of hostility towards MU from deep inside the Journal. Most papers in a city of less than a million people would embrace a program like MUs. Going to the Sweeet sixteen, all the sucess this season and overall. I have not really seen many human interest articles about the players. Just blank reporting,page filler material from Hunt,nobody even wanted to cover Marquette after Rosiak got reassigned, and now 4 writers jump in on this non-story.

1-2 posts, 1 article, maybe? Not much. Feel free to check my post history, but I think I've hardly spent any time outside of this thread talking about it. If I have 2 posts in that massive thread, I'd be surprised.

Yep. I trust Al Qaeda more than I trust badger fans. especially since I saw posts about a MU player supposedly "beating the crap" out of someone awhile back and Buzz covering it up. Several of their posters have been known to spew out and out lies abiout MU and their program, and some know exactly the right people to perpetuate those lies, and get them out in the media.

Can you clarify what Buzz said to indicate he thinks there is an agenda?  Just curious..
