I'm not sure. What's your opinion Marquette Nation

TallTitan34

Iona.  I'm basing this purely on RPI even though they are very close.

Da 'Lanche

Iona....simply because I think BYU plays better competition and they usually have semi-pro 28 year old post-mission dudes playing that can sometimes be a problem.    Plus, isn't Iona the Gaels????    The frickin' Gaels???    Bring on Iona,

QuetteHoops

Iona has a really good back court with MoMo Jones (Arizona transfer) Machado (wooden finalist, 9.9 apg) They have a good offense but that is pretty much all they do not a very good defensive team. BYU lost to Wisconsin pretty badly on a Neutral court early in the season. I watched that game and was VERY underwhelmed by them, I think I would rather face BYU.

Either way I think it's a good first round match up for Marquette.

Pakuni

Iona. How often do you hear this ...  a team MU could just kill in the paint.
BYU has some bigs that could give MU trouble.
That said, BYU has some guards that would have far more trouble with MU's pressure defense than Iona would.

nyg

BYU has two big men in Davies and Harstock.  Iona has two great guards.

I go with BYU.  Guard play wins games in tournament.

PGsHeroes32

Glover is a solid big for Iona but they dont play much defense. I think we could get in transition vs them.

Byu is scarier with their size and they play way better d.

We just better show up.
Lazar picking up where the BIG 3 left off....

chapman

I'll say BYU.  I don't want to see Machado (13.6 PPG, nation-leading 9.9 APG) run around doing whatever he wants like Siva did last game.  A quality point guard scares me more than a couple above average bigs.

brewcity77

Iona. They don't have much size and their defense sucks. Come tourney time, team defense is my biggest worry, because those are the teams that tend to be dangerous.

Here's something interesting...both of these teams play very fast. BYU plays the #5 rated tempo per Kenpom, Iona plays #22. No matter which team we get, it should be a track meet. For the record, we're #15.

sjl4mubball

I would rather play BYU.

But either team should not be a challenge to Marquette.  Both teams shouldn't be in the field IMO.  Drexel and Washington are better teams.

BYU is more control the pace, and Iona will get up and down the court, living up to their nickname of the GAELS.

When we get the W on Thursday, it will be an interesting game on Saturday vs Murray State.  They will be playing in a very friendly environment since the school is in Kentucky!

No complaints from me, I like our draw, now lets win and advance to the 2nd weekend!

Go Marquette!

Gottlieb picks us to play Iona.  Says they pressure for 94 feet and we need to be careful about the pressure not being another UL situation.  Still picks us though.

Or Gail, a former cheerleader that by mere mention of her name brings old codgers to their knees.

Let them pressure us.  If they do we walk away with a big win.  UL is the only team that could press us.  Most other teams that pressed us gave up layups as Junior just broke it down and opened up fast-break looks.

Not many teams have the length and athleticism of UL and the refs aren't going to be as lenient in the tournament.  A press against teams not named mizzou, UNC or Kentucky doesn't scare me too much.

I'd want the better team which I see as BYU.  Bad teams often play well against superior teams because they don't playwith the game.  Think of a traffic cone.  It doesn't move or fall for anything (takes the charge?).  A finesse team would be very frustrated with that.  Iona is the traffic cone.

karavotsos

Voted BYU because it will make for a better famous alumni thread.

What porn stars are from BYU?

Clam Crowder

Iona is pretty good, I prefer BYU but I think we can easily beat either if we show up. If it's we're better at every position except PG and Gardner should be able to have a field day when he's in there offensively. We will play MU style bball get one of their 3 best players in foul trouble and watch the team break down from there. The round 2 draw is a great draw, that RPI and that SOS shouldn't get anyone too worries they lost to Tennessee State...I am not worried about that game at all they have one player that could play in a top tier conference on that team. We just have to handle business against BYU/Iona

Hm, I voted for BYU, but last time MU played Iona - the result was not favorable...

Uh, we pretty much lost to everybody in 1988.
