Selfishly, I would love for MU to keep him.   Realistically, he  has earned a shot.

I just hope buzz has some fantastic assistants in mind...  If we go far we could lose 2 easily.

Really happy for Tony.  Buzz will have a coaching line as long as anyone when all is said and done.

If Benford leaves I would love to see us go after Jerrence Howard.

Nothing I have seen from Buzz thus far makes me think he does not have able bodied assistants in line.  I really have liked the staff he has put together.  I think he will find another when Benford takes the opportunity he desires and has earned.

Pay the man his money and get out of the way is great way to stop the discussion. If anyone thinks the dance was bad for the school I think they do not understand the business of sports today. Buzz has high school kids talking about MU ball and that is a good thing. Buzz and the team has put a spotlight over the university and anything other than appreciation and thanks is insane.

I'm all about Buzz getting his coaching tree started. I'd love to see Benford, Aki, and Monarch get shots at HC jobs elsewhere. I'm confident that just like Buzz has found diamonds in the rough in recruiting, he will find more diamonds in the rough in coaching. And 20-30 years down the road, I'd love to have a laundry list of ex-Marquette assistants out there salivating at the opportunity to come back and take over for their old boss when he steps down after 8 Final Fours and 3 national championships.

Best of luck to Tony!

and this has to do with Benford how?

We are soon going to being hearing about our head coach mentioned for job openings, that is wat it has to do with it. I would prefer to be proactive, especially with what we are building.

"You get, what you earn" Buzz Williams.  Losing good assistants, is inevitable.   Go Marquette!

I could see Buzz bringing in Coach Courtney from that Houston high school.  He has D1 assistant coach experience, solid ties to Houston prep prospects and coached both Otule and Durley.

To me losing assistants is like debating social issues in an election. If that is the biggest issue at hand life is pretty good. Good programs replace assistants easily. I hope over the next twenty years the biggest problem our program has is replacing assistants.

You know that Buzz just signed a new contract last year, right?  A 10 year roll-over contract that nets him $2mill+ with annual escalators and performance bonuses. Not sure about buy-out clauses (don't remember if they were removed in this last contract).

I thought the buy out clause went up significantly, though I'm not going to do any research to back up that claim.

+1000, agree, there are alot of assistants.
However, I do believe, assts who actually land a high major or mid major job, points to the success of the program.

Not sure that was the thinking of many when the last guy was here.

Different times. Different thoughts.

I wish Buzz having a long term contract meant he was here long term, but I also wish Santa Claus was a real dude.

Buzz could have a 1-year contract renewed every year and I'm still confident he'd be here long term. After 4 years, he's done a great job, at least from my perspective, in earning faith and trust. He'll be here as long as we'll have him, which for me at least, is a long, long time.

Long-term contracts and buyout clauses mean nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. There are ways around them for every coach, and Buzz is no exception.

If he wants to stay, he'll stay. If he wants to go, he'll go. I hope he wants to stay, but by now we all should know how this works in college sports. I mean, Roy Williams left Kansas, for cripe's sake. Calipari might leave Kentucky for the NBA. Self left Illinois shortly after saying he was there for "the long haul." There are few, if any, true "destination" jobs. That's just the way it is.

I have a feeling this won't be the last time I have to write this, or something like it, in the coming weeks.

I want to see him succeed. So if he feels it's his time, God bless him.

But who will he take with him (recruits)? Who will replace him?

Isn't Buzz already one of the top 10 paid coaches in the country?  He's done a great job but the man is getting paid.  MU has had a spotlight from basketball for the last decade.  Let's not get ahead of ourselves.  He's paid very well and he has the #2 basketball budget in the country.

No kidding - I hope MU as an employer isn't immature enough to blindly give our coach another raise each year (on top of his existing incentives) because the rumor mill begins buzzing every March. We haven't had one post-season win yet.

After reading the story on the Loserville site that they have gotten Pitino's real compensation I am not so certain.....it depends on how many coaches have this type of sweet-heart deal....

$7.5 mildo from all sources.......WOW!

They are so pissed at Loserville......
