DJO and Jae has been awesome for us this season, but which duo was the best 1-2 punch at MU?

Choose to base it on points, overall stats, over a single season, over multiple seasons...I just want to see people's opinions and the evidence they're using.

Butch Lee and Bo Ellis is the first combo that comes to mind.

Kids on this board just don't get it. The heyday of Marquette basketball is in the rearview mirror. Brute Force, Dean The Dream, Sugar, Allie, Jay, Bo, Chones, Grafton Gun, Elevator Man, Evil Dr. Blackheart, Butch, Toone, Black Jerry West, Spider, Stretch, Luke, Larry, Cloud Piercer, Rosie, UP, Doc, Dean, Michael, Mandy, Marcus, et al.
Thankfully, Buzz has got the bus back on course.

Answer the question, o' Grizzly One.

Meminger and Chones are a lethal combo.

I think it has to be Bo and Butch for the simple fact they did it for 3 years and most of the other ones I can think of were 2 years at most.

4everwarriors

Hands down the Butch and Bo show in MU lore. Trumped Bernie and Ernie and just 'bout all others.

ahhh, saw this just after posting the updated Top 50 on cracked sidewalks.

if you make them play together at least 2 years it simplifies it, and you have Lee and Ellis as the best, and then I think it's between Matthews and Jerel (since Dominic's big production was before the duo blossomed) and DJO and Crowder.

However, if you just look at one year combinations, it gets confusing because of the great run in the McGuire years.  then I'd say:

1. Ellis-Lee
2. Meminger-Chones
3. Meminger-Thompson
4. Lucas-Ellis
5. Wade-Diener
6. DJO-Crowder
7. Chones-McNeil
8. McNeil-Lucas
9. McNeal-Mathews
10. Kojis-Mangham
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

Cloud Piercer?  That Michigan State transfer never even started a game.  I will grant you that his nickname beats "Mellow" hands down.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

OK ... I'll go back to my freshman year and say Sam Worthen and Bernard Toone!

Fortunately for Worthen he played in the days when his size 6'5" caused him to be moved to forward from point guard.  These days he'd be moved to center!

What did you geezers spend all you time on before the 'Scoop??

seakm4

I'm too young to remember the older ones, but I remember Diener and Novak having a pick and pop game that was unstoppable when they were hitting.

tower912

Actually, Diener and Novak were very stoppable, because Novak couldn't create a shot on his own and could be defended on the switch by a 6'2 guy.   Now if you want to close your eyes and say 'mmmm', picture Diener and Novak playing in Buzz's offense.

The Cloud Piercer sure had a memorable Thursday night in March, 1977 that did not unnoticed by this old geezer. Recent times I was a Diener/Wade guy.

PuertoRicanNightmare

How about Wade and Bob Jackson? No slight to Diener, of course, but in 2003 I'm not sure Jackson wasnt the real second banana. Debatable.

Was just typing that.  Jackson is one of the most overlooked players in Marquette history.  He averaged 15.4 ppg that year and 7.5 rpg.  I love Diener, he was an incredible player who was a true Warrior, but in the 2002-2003 season the 1-2 punch was Wade and Jackson.  With Wade averaging 21.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.3 bpg, and 2.2 spg and both of those guys shooting above 50% on the year, I wasn't alive for the Al days, but my guess is that 1-2 punch rivals just about any other 1-2 punch in MU basketball.

Jackson's game vs. Kentucky was incredible.  After Marquis Estill took a shot at him (saying he didn't remember him even though he had played him twice a year while Jackson was at Mississippi State), Jackson went for 24 and 15 while holding Estill to 10 and 6.

I do now wonder where Wade-Jackson would rank. Has that been explored bamamarquettefan (Pudner)?

And when is the updated book coming out? :)
