"WVU and the Big East are nearing agreement on a settlement worth at least $20 million that would allow the Mountaineers to play in the Big 12 in 2012-13, according to CBSSports.com. Both parties are scheduled to appear in a Rhode Island court Thursday to give an update on the status of court-ordered nonbinding mediation."

Do the remaining 13 schools split the money or does the conference keep it?  Would we get $1.5 million?

Can "not poaching" any other members be a part of this agreement?

I do not know how the money is split, but whatever deal they reach with WV will be what it will cost Pitt & Syracuse to leave early. That would be $60 million divided by 13 teams. Perhaps if Pitt & Syracuse stay it is $20 divided by 15 teams. I suspect the conference would get 1 or 2 shares. That would mean MU would get $60million divided by 14 or 15 shares.

My guess is that Syracuse and Pitt's buy-outs are much smaller.

First, they only have to buy themselves out of one year versus two for WVU.

Second, the B12 really needed WVU because of its television contracts so they are likely fronting a part of this.  The ACC really doesn't need Syracuse or Pitt until 2014.

Third, the BE has Memphis, SMU, UCF, Houston, Boise, and SDSU joining in 2013.  Does it really want to deal with two members for one year in a 13 team conference?  Or does it move on?

My guess it is that it is more in the $5M to $7M range.

Football schools will see almost all of the WV money.  Football has the real damages for 2012 if they leave for 2012.  MU will get part of the normal buy out split amongst all teams (5 million), with a higher percentage going to football schools. Not sure what percentage of the 5 million goes to non-football schools, maybe 60/40 (just a guess). So, it is peanuts to MU, really.

Does anyone know if the newcomers are getting money to join?  I would guess that 20 mil would go to entice them and perhaps some grant money to upgrade facilities where necessary.  If not, it should go to weathering the next storm.
But I suppose it can be used to dangle in front of schools like UConn who are looking to bolt...

Some of the money could go toward paying Boise State's exit fee to bring BS in earlier...?

They get increased television revenue.
