I don't even think it's the best game on tonight.

Kansas @ Baylor
Georgetown @ Syracuse

January 1981, Freshman Doc beats bitter rival ND on the last shot of the game.

February 2012, Freshman Austin beats bitter rival UNC on the last shot of the game.

What we saw is not new.

I was hoping Doc was going to mention that when they interviewed him.

I also believe that both ND in 1981 and UNC now were both rated #5.

Nothing and I mean nothing compared to the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodger rivalry and that is comming from a life long Yankee fan. Only those of us who grew up then can understand that. Like many soon to be Big East rivalries...Gone with the Wind.

What made that shot even better was that he had 6 ft 11in Zeller right in his face.

With his arms at his side.

Yeah that baffled me.  The only way UNC loses in regulation is on a three...Zeller should have been on top of Rivers.  If he goes around you and hits a tough running two, so be it.  You head to overtime.  Instead you let him take a couple rhythm dribbles and have a wide open look at the basket.  Really bad play by Zeller...and he also missed a free throw to leave it a two point game.

tower912

....and tipped in a 3 for Duke.   Lots of points, but a forgettable game for him.

MU B2002

UNC choked away a 10 pt lead in 2 min flat, at home, to their biggest rival.

I am sure the Scoop servers would have burst into flames had we done the same at home to UW.

Holy cow, what a shot at the buzzer by Rivers.  Great game to watch for college b-ball.

Looks to me like Austin is having a lot of fun at Duke and probably doesn't give one thought about goin' elsewhere, 'cept to the Association.

Give coach K  this year's Carolina's players and ol' Roy Duke's guys and the Tar Heels win easily - not just last night but just about every night.

+1
Roy's coaching acumen seems to be exhausted on signing day.  Get the best players and push the pace.  That's about the extent of it.

Some scoopers would do it if MU choked away a lead at home  to the Lakers.   Sometimes good teams make runs late, particularly at home.    Duke doing it at Chapel Hill just adds an impressive degree of difficulty.   Losing big lead sucks.  Losing big centers sucks worse.

To me the best rivalries are long lasting and aren;t dependent on the individuals participating in any one year:

1.  College hoops - Duke/UNC hands down
2.  College football - Army/Navy, followed closely by Michigan/Ohio State and Alabama/Auburn
3.  MLB - Red Sox/Yankees, Cubs/Cards a distant 2nd (This would be a better rivalry if the Cubs were competitive more consistently)
4.  NFL - Packers/Bears, all the rest of the big rivalries come and go (Patriots and Jets are big now, but will it remain a big rivalry after Belichick is gone?)
5.  NBA - Celtics/Lakers.  This is unmistakeably true.  It is unique in that they're not in the same conference and they play many other teams much more often than they play each other.
6.  NHL - I have no idea, don't watch it.
7.  Tennis - Best ever was Borg/McEnroe, though Nadal/Federer was really good
8.  Olympics - US/USSR - (West vs Eastern Europe) The Olympics will never again be as awesome as they were before the Berlin Wall came down
9.  Boxing - Ali/Frazier

In my opinion, in order:

College - Michigan/OSU, then down a couple notches to UT/OU and Duke/UNC

Baseball - Yanks/Sawx, Cubs/Cards and maybe Mets/Phils

Basketball - Celtics/Lakers, Bulls/Cavs or Bulls/Detriot, Pacers/Knicks.

Football - Pack/Bears, Cowboys/Redskins, Steelers/Browns

Hockey - Blackhawks/Red Wings, Bruins/Habs, Leafs/Sens

just wanted to weigh in on a few things here...  Celtics/Pistons should probably be on your NBA list above Bulls/Cavs, IMO

as far as NHL...  I guess I'm not sure whether you're talking all-time rivalries or present day... but I would say that currently the three best rivalries are Blackhawks/Wings, Capitals/Pens, Rangers/Flyers.  however I believe for there to be a rivalry, you must have fan bases that really respect eachother and hate eachother at the same time.  Red Wings/Avalanche is far and away the most intense NHL rivalry of the past two decades

to be honest, while Chicagoans think there is an intense existing rivalry between they and the Wings, Detroiters downplay the rivalry (mostly because it will never reach the fever pitch of the Avalanche rivalry) and more importantly, the lack of respect that Detroiters have for bandwagon-addict Chicagoans.  It's the same way Cubs fans feel about Brewers fans or the way Michigan fans feel about the MSU rivalry... the flash in the pan success of the Blackhawks is insulting to Detroiters who have embraced the Hockeytown image for years, and for Chicago to just show up out of nowhere and reclaim significance (1 cup wooo!) really does not impress Wings fans... I certainly hope that the rivalry regains its Original 6 history, but the way the City of Chicago abandoned its hockey team really turns off true hockey fans.

I can tell you for sure that Wings fans are looking forward to the pleasant experience of playing the Leafs in the upcoming Winter Classic, because they are diehard hockey fans, understand the game, and more importantly they have respect for the National Anthem.  I don't think hockey fans would have the same pleasant experience if the status-craving FIBs wandered into town, pillaging good moods left and right

Typical Detroit. Like everything else, no one cares.

Might be the only compelling argument ever for keeping the Berlin Wall up.

Though the history of the Original 6 matchup between the hawks and wings is historic...i would have to agree that it is not what it use to be.  When the wings made their cup runs, it was the Avs they found themselves pinned against big game after big game.

Just like the past 3 years for the hawks, i would count the Cannucks as bigger rivalries as they have played each other in the playoffs and have built the type of hatred that creates a rivalry.

The national anthem was a tradition started in '85 against the oilers, but it was more of the '91 ASG that made it famous with the crowd cheering during the national anthem, many showing support for the troops who had entered in the Iraq war just a few days earlier.  Please tell me you also hate the Flyers because they don't even sing the national anthem....

MU82

UNC-Duke is so the best college hoops rivalry might as well not even name a second.

Bears-Packers is a great rivalry, but to say Cowboys-Redskins hasn't stood the test of time is just silly.

Cubs-Cardinals is well behind Yankees-Red Sox, and maybe not as good as Dodgers-Giants. But Cubs-Cards is good even when the Cubs suck. Cubs-White Sox also is fun.

Bulls-Cavs or Bulls-Pistons? Really? It's not the 1980s anymore. Today's NBA doesn't have a truly great rivalry, though Lakers-Clippers certainly has become one to watch and there is hope for Bulls-Heat.

College football obviously is Marquette club vs. Pillsbury Bible. Duh!
