Is this legitimately the best regular season game of the year or a creation of ESPN?

Skitch

I don't even think it's the best game on tonight.

Kansas @ Baylor
Georgetown @ Syracuse

Tugg Speedman

Last time I checked neither of those games have been the feature of a HBO documentary.

So let me restate ... Is Duke/UNC legitimately the biggest rivalry in college basketball or a creation of ESPN?

GGGG

It's a good rivalry game, but ESPN has hyped it up a lot.

You didn't ask if it was the best rivalry or if it was the feature of a HBO documentary. You asked if it was legitimately the best regular season game of the year.

So let me restate...not even the best game tonight.

As for best rivalry, who knows. Outside of Duke/UNC, college basketball rivalries don't seem to get the same attention nationally as college football rivalries. Even the rivalries that are so hyped by espn during football season don't seem to get much attention during hoops season.

5858-5857.....combined score of last 75 Duke vs.UNC games...Best Rivalry by far...

Why does this stat make it a great rivalry?

mubb34

Campuses are as close as you can get to each other....So its a rivalry if one teams blows out a team everytime they play? 75 games....1 point off...How the heck does that not make a great rivalry?

Many things have been the feature of an HBO documentary which are nothing close to great . while the rivalry is probably the best, the game tonight is not the best of thr regular season

NCMUFan

In North Carolina it is a great rivalry.  In Wisconsin, probably not.  No one here really cares about Marquette vs Wisconsin.

This is well stated.  I'm going to be watching Top Chef anyway.

DCWarriors04

Duke/UNC is a great rivalry, but I wouldn't call it the greatest.

Kansas/Missouri
Purdue/Indiana
Georgetown/Syracuse
Michigan State/Indiana

I'm sure there are others...Duke/UNC is just big because Dukey V loves it.

I didn't say it wasn't a "great rivalry."  But you said earlier you said "Best Rivalry by far."  Just because it is one point off in its history doesn't indicate that.

Harvard and MIT are in the same conference and are so close to each other that they share a common border.  Does that make this a great rivalry?

GGGG

Harvard and  MIT aren't in the same conference.

Agree with this.  Can't call any rivalry bigger, but there have been bigger games this season, and much bigger games in the rivalry the past few years.

nyg

Holy cow, what a shot at the buzzer by Rivers.  Great game to watch for college b-ball.

Skitch

Game definitely lived up to the hype tonight.  Dickie V was nearly speechless when that shot went through the hoop and that is saying something.

This just in---Austin Rivers is good.

nyg

What made that shot even better was that he had 6 ft 11in Zeller right in his face.

Markusquette

That game was awesome.

...or not.

And about the Austin Rivers thread, he may not just make Marquette a 2 seed if we had him (not saying he even considered us, just going with the thread), he may have made Marquette a National Champion.

Gene Wojochowski just started writing another greatest game book.

Duke/UNC is the best college basketball matchup, but nowhere the best sports rivalry.

I agree with this.  Might be the best overall college rivalry.  Michigan/OSU football is right up there.  OU/Texas is also good.  I'd say Louisville/Kentucky is the 2nd best college basketball rivalry, and that's not even close to UNC/Duke.

Yankees/Red Sox is obviously the best in baseball.  Celtics/Lakers is obviously the best in the NBA.  Not sure about the NFL.  It could be Bears/Packers or 'Boys/'Skins.

In my opinion, in order:

College - Michigan/OSU, then down a couple notches to UT/OU and Duke/UNC

Baseball - Yanks/Sawx, Cubs/Cards and maybe Mets/Phils

Basketball - Celtics/Lakers, Bulls/Cavs or Bulls/Detriot, Pacers/Knicks.

Football - Pack/Bears, Cowboys/Redskins, Steelers/Browns

Hockey - Blackhawks/Red Wings, Bruins/Habs, Leafs/Sens

I wonder why there are so many Chicago teams in your list...

In all honesty, I think Yanks/Sox stands alone in baseball by a very wide margin.  At the present moment, the Bulls/Heat probably have a better rivalry going than the Bulls/Cavs or Pistons, but historically probably Bulls/Pistons.  Pacers/Knicks was only good for one generation of players (similar to Bulls/Pistons).  Agree with football.  Don't know or care about hockey, so I'll trust your judgment.
