Has Mayo hit the so called "freshman wall"?  I know there was a previous thread advising he had some sort of issues, but don't know the truth about that or anything else that may be effecting his play.

Tonight he had two open looks at threes and both looked good, but were the in/outs.

In his last three games:

8 total points, 6 of which were from the free throw line.
6 turnovers
1 for 10 on fg, including 0 for 5 from three.

I hope he comes out of this funk real soon.

Yup hes struggling right now. At least hes not jacking up shots left and right when its not falling.

Gonna need him on Saturday though.

I was thinking the same thing.  He is just going to have to play through it.  Keep playing defense and take your shots in the flow of the game.

Interestingly, he just tweeted that he's headed straight to the gym b/c he didn't play well, but his team did.

Cadougan is struggling offensively too.  3-18 in the last five games.

Honestly, all of the freshman have kind of been stuck.  D. Wilson is doing what he does defensively, but that's about it.  Juan is a bundle of energy but looks a little lost.  And Todd seems to have hit that wall.

Maybe it's just because there are no more secrets and the season gets long.

DCWarriors04

He's a shooter, once he sees one go in it will click again. Look at DJO on Saturday, couldn't hit a thing in the first 5+ minutes, saw one go in and was a beast the rest of the day.

The quality of opponents has increased as well. Guys are more likely to go into long funks. Can't "get well" against southwestern eastern misou state anymore.

Guys just have to play through it. Buzz has to manage for it and figure out how to get production out of them.

I  chalk it up to the freshman funk.  The dude can play.   I would like to see him get some points on the break to get him going and also get to the line...the 3s will come.

Normally I'd agree but through seven games in conference he was playing good ball. Lost his confidence, needs a breakout game. I would say S Florid and SH are the two worst teams they've played in conference outside of maybe SJ and he's had brutal games.

True, except Wisconsin is no "southwestern eastern misou state" and Mayo had an outstanding game in Madison.

i'm not sure i agree with the freshman funk for mayo.  i think his minutes are limited as a freshman, especially if vander plays the way he did tonight, and he needs minutes to be able to get in a groove and play through a couple misses.  we've seen this in numerous games with djo, but mayo isn't really afforded that type of opportunity this year.  my guess is he starts next year, gets heavy minutes, and scores a bunch of points as he becomes a regular part of the offense.

MerrittsMustache

Early in the season, there was a small sample size of Mayo tape out there, especially since he wasn't a highly-touted HS player. As the season went on, opposing coaches were able to see more of him and pinpoint his tendencies and gameplan accordingly. Now it's on Mayo to add more to his repetoire.

CTWarrior

He's got to make the 3.  Once he does that, it opens up his dribble drive and leads to all sorts of good things.  Lately he hasn't been taking that shot and has been barreling into traffic trying to make something happen.

We need him to be a scoring option against good teams.

Secret is out on him. He's been played much more physically the last few games. Cutting, driving, getting bodied the entire time.

Once he adjusts to that he'll be fine. His D hasn't suffered, so I'm not worried.

NersEllenson

It has nothing to do with the "secret being out on Mayo."  He's had a couple of rough games.  Nothing more than that.  The kid can flat out play.  Has the best stroke on the team from the field and FT line.  Plays generally with great tempo.  Is just pressing a little bit right now...

Watch a little more closely. There has been an adjustment the past few games in the way they have played him.

The BE is a grinder. Just a rough patch right now, he'll be fine.

I had thought that Mayo had major upside, but not so sure now, as he hasn't improved----in fact regressed.

We seem to have a nice ebb and flow between Vander and Mayo.  Be a great game when both are bringing it.
When we stop talking, really bad stuff happens.

dwaderoy2004

they'll make a nice little backcourt the next two years if vander embraces the PG role, which he seems to be doing.  Even after his personal 7-0 spurt last night, he didn't try to force anything.

jsglow

Sure Mayo's shot has been just a bit off.  But his on court decisioning remains just fine.  Not concerned.

Canned Goods n Ammo

You guys are right, I didn't mean for my comment to come off as a shot at Mayo.

I just think this conf. is a grinder, and it can lead to prolonged funks for young players.

Happened/happening to Vander.

If Todd has a bad game, he has a very short recovery period, and he will need to be at the top of his game the next time MU takes the court. There are no breaks in the Big East, even against bad teams (see: DePaul a couple years back).

Just needs to keep working. Him and Vander are a nice combo right now.
