OK, so the question becomes does he get a sixth year in 13-14?  Does he apply?  Does he qualify?

If he does, we have no slots to fill for 13-14 as the roster presently stands.

Good. Should have just done it from the get go.

I say that it does not happen.  Too many highly regarded recruits are showing interest in MU.  Chris has had his share of injuries and missed time due to them.  I don't think Buzz takes the chance with anymore.  Some athletes are just injury prone and maybe Chris has that jinx.  Have the surgery, rehab and come back for one more year.

Is in it the program's best interest to have him apply?

Unfortunate as it is, this is the third season ending injury for him in four years.

He should be earning his degree either this year or next and I hope he comes back strong next season. After that, I think it is time to move on.

Boone

Agree. Don't think a 6th year will serve the interests of either party very well.

Does he want to?
Are you asking does he what to have the surgery of have the 6th year?

I thought from the beginning he was going to have surgery.  I don't think, though, the waiting added much to the timetable.  Maybe a week or two.

There's no certainty the NCAA would approve a sixth year, and who knows if Chris would want to come back anyway?

No certainty, but highly likely they would.  I agree with the latter, have not heard anything from CO on that topic.

Agree.  An ACL tear does not heal...with 6 to 8 months recovery why let him play at 60 percent for this season and next if you let him out there till May.  Better to repair it now and be back for next season and beyond at full strength.

It is really a mute question at this point in time, he can't apply for the 6th year until after he uses his 4 in 5  years of eligibility which isn't until the summer of 2013.

Correct.  But, both he and MU will need to plan for it, if he wants to ...

PGsHeroes32

I don't want him for a 6th year. That roster is going to be great as it is and it just cuts down on other possible recruits and transfers.

Not good.  Good well soon Chris!

Marquette junior big man Chris Otule's season is over.

Otule suffered a left knee injury on Dec. 6, but was making progress and Marquette coach Buzz Williams anticipated he would return sometime in Big East play.

However, Williams told CBSSports.com -- shortly after his team's loss at Syracuse on Saturday -- that Otule will have season-ending surgery on Tuesday after a setback last week.

"We will apply for a sixth-year two years from now," Williams said.

Otule wasn't a guy who put up impressive numbers (5.0 ppg, 4.4 rpg), but he was key for Williams because he was a legitimate center. Now the Golden Eagles are either forced to play Davante Gardner extended minutes or have to play forwards Jae Crowder or Jamil Wilson in the middle.

Poor guy can't stay healthy.  Let him graduate and get on with his life.

Actually, we're forced to do both.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I really don't like saying this, but I have to agree.  Fierce loyalty to your players can be a two edged sword.  What's Chris going to do in school for a sixth year?  Is keeping Chris for a sixth year best for team as a whole?  Is this fair to Durley/Gardener?

On the other hand, stories of such loyalty can't hurt when they're heard by the coaches whose kids you're trying to recruit.

Its what is best for Chris, not Marquette Basketball.

Stretchdeltsig

It's disappointing for Chris and MU.  Hopefully, he can contribute next year in his final season.

Way to to put yourself first. We should want what is best for Chris.

Imagine this board, if Chris gets a 6th year and uses the graduate rule to transfer to another school.
