Liked: After we started out cold from 3-point range, we stopped taking so many of them. Unlike UWM, we didn't have a guy chucking 9 bricks/airballs/clunkers from behind the arc. We took the ball to the hoop and drew fouls.

Disliked: We let UWM get 19 offensive rebounds. What will some Big East teams do to us? With or without Otule, we have to clean this up. Even relatively little guys can box out.

This confuses the hell out of me. Other than Otule, we seem really bad at boxing out. I get that they don't have prototype center size, but shouldn't Crowder, Jamil, Davante, and even guys like Blue and DJO be able to box out? We seem really poor at it.

Marquette & UWM grabbed roughly the same percentage of available offensive rebounds, though.

I did notice in the first couple minutes of the game the guys were desperately trying to find someone to box out on the shot. That quickly faded to every-man for himself though. It seems like it was a point of emphasis that just didn't stick for more than a couple minutes.

Boxing out is not really a simple thing given the defense Buzz employs - that tries to push the ball out 40 feet from the basket, and protects the paint at all costs...which induces a lot of 3 point attempts.  Everyone can see MU ends up in a lot of rotations, with guys sprinting/jumping at 3 point shooters. The big issue is where are Jae, Jamil, Ox, and Otule (on the floor at time of shot) with the defensive strategy of hedging on pick and rolls, switching on some screens, etc.?

Buzz would much rather a team shoot from the 3 than the paint as in his view the % will be lower.  The problem, however, is that long shots lead to long rebounds..and when our guys are leaving their feet to contest shots from the 3 point arc - they certainly aren't able to box out.    Not always clear cut man to man assignments on who you block out.  Couple this with our desire to get out in transition..and usually have 1 or 2 guys as outlets.

The problem is often when a guy gets an offensive rebound he is in or near the paint with a defense which may not be in position to defend.  So if you are giving up offensive rebounds at a 25% click that how is that offset by playing good defense when one fourth of the time the guy ends up in the paint anyways?

Really think there needs to be some sort of adjustment to limit the offensive rebounds.  It will cost us more than a few games this year if it continues.

I'd hypothesize that a majority of the offensive rebounds MU gives up, tend to be rebounded outside of the painted area - due to the longer caroms of misses from 3 point land.  Will be interesting to pay attention to moving forward - how many O rebounds are at point blank range, vs outside the painted area...

I'm not sure I would agree.  At the least, the ones that stand out to me are the ones that are close in.  Usually due to the MU player not boxing out, as has been discussed earlier.  Sometimes the 2nd tier comes in to snatch it.  The lack of rebounding fundamentals frustrates the heck out of me.  If you've earned the position, keep it.  Why allow someone to come in and pick up a cheap rebound?

All the ones that Storm Warren was getting right before his multiple poster shot moments were point blank. We simply don't box out well. And with Warren, there were a few where he would just step between two guys to grab the board and hammer it back down. That's sloppy boxing out, not a case of long, unpredictable caroms off the back iron.

This is my only frustration with Jae, and he isn't even a little guy.  His rebounding numbers are good, but he could be so much better in that category in my opinion.  Wonderful player, but this is an area for improvement.
