Wow. I haven't seen our guards getting outplayed that badly in a long time. The defensive intensity by LSU was impressive. Not to mention they won every 50/50 rebound and loose ball. Props to Coach Johnson for getting his team so jacked up. No way they played with that same type of intensity when they lost to South Alabama. I feel bad for UWM. I think the boys are going to be playing with a chip on their shoulder on Thursday.

brewcity77

Not really. We didn't finish at all. And I really hate to say it, but the ref disparity seemed a bit crap. Seriously...27-14 FTAs and 22-15 fouls? I think Davante was fouled 15 times on one possession alone.

DCWarriors04

was especially evident in the first half...every 5 seconds a whistle was being blown.

Not really? LSU didn't play out of their mind? They didn't miss in the 2nd half. Yes I agree the refs were homers. We were getting absolutely ravaged down low. Still not the reason we lost. Give them credit they played very well.

They certainly played well, but they missed a ton of free throws and benefited a lot from 50-50 calls.

It really looked like we were either rusty or tired, because LSU outworked us for most of the game.

Playing well and playing out of your mind are two totally different things. I feel like our loss was a lot more on us not executing and turning to jello against a zone than the other team beating us into submission. At no point did I feel like we were losing to a superior team. I still don't feel that way. I truly believe that if we played this team 20 times, we would win 19. Yes, they got that one tonight, but there's no way in hell you'll convince me LSU is better than us, or that this loss was even so much down to what they did as what we didn't do.

LSU didn't play zone.  I have mentioned this in other threads.  Our offensive motion made it look like a zone...but they were in man all night.

Clam Crowder

The refs were pretty poor tonight...that call in front of the bench was awful. Hickey clearly touched it.

The FT discrepancy is noticeable.

How often has a Buzz team not dominated that category?

Maybe so, but when I see 2 guys staying low and not sticking to a specific man, and 3 guys on the perimeter guarding an area more than a specific man, I'm going to call it zone. Especially when there's a clear move from obvious man-to-man early in the game.

Call it what you want, but it looked like a zone, behaved like a zone, and we struggled against it like a zone.

I think we are mostly on the same page here. I think the phrase "out of their mind" probably threw you. (Although winning when you have a 5% chance would usually require you to play "out of your mind" right?) I in no way think LSU is better than MU. But I do think they physically beat us into submission. MU was uncomfortable all night. That was LSU's doing.

Brew, we played a type of dribble drive offense with little perimeter movement.  That's why it looked like a zone.  However, we went to more of a motion offense, and it was clear that they were in man when they stuck with the cutters.  (In fact, I had to do a double take because I thought at one point we were running a slight variation of the swing.)

I thought they were playing a match-up zone as well.  Admittedly, our O was not moving.  But when was the last time you saw a Buzz coached MU team not move against a man to man.  I am not buying that they played man.  Some saw what they saw, and I did as well.  At one point, the man in the middle of the lane flashed to the top of the key to stop a dribble by DJO.  Odd movement for a man to man defense, if you ask me.

I'm not sure where to find the stats but how many of those fouls were called at the end of the game when we were fouling on purpose? This loss cannot be blamed on the refs. They reffed it pretty loosely with the occasional bad call (J. Wilson block comes to mind) but overall I thought it wasn't that poorly officiated. I do agree with you though that we didn't finish either. LSU looked like they wanted it more.

NotAnAlum

No this one was on us.  Our whole offense is predicated on one of two things.  Getting fast break opportunites and getting fouled on the way to the hoop.  For a team that drives we don't finish well.  This usually doesn't matter because we are getting a foul call and going to the line to shoot 2.  In this game we didn't get those calls and so our "throws" at the basket just end up as bad misses.

According to the play-by-play chart on ESPN's box score with 1:20 left in the game We had 15 fouls to their 14 and we were 9-13 from the FT line to their 5-16.  So it was in the last 1:20 of the game when we were forced to foul to get possessions that we committed 7 fouls and they hit 9-11 free throws.  (They had one foul and we missed the front end of the bonus).

Yeah, they blew that call, but the way they were playing (pumped up) and the way we were playing (not so good) I don't think affected the outcome of the game. On another note their two freshman were pretty impressive and they beat us wthout their top scorer. I thought it was a great game until the last minute when we imploded. I think they have a chance to do well in the SEC if they continue to play the way they have. They beat a good team, hell a great team.

bilsu

I am blaming the loss on Otule for hurting his knee. We will lose several games, because we will miss his size in the middle.

Rudy

I thought they took and made a lot of tough shots in the second half. We were fighting pretty hard. Jae made some nice plays. DJO finally got some looks. They kept chucking and hitting tough threes. Then a crucial two that was a blown defensive assignment on the left baseline, but three after three were tough shots.
