The Tip
« on: December 19, 2011, 10:02:06 AM »
Will we ever win an opening tip with Gardner doing "the jump"? I'm thinking not.

On saturday he barely got off the ground, and landed much sooner than the opposing center - enough for him to have probably the quickest injury ever in college hoops. Hopefully for him, just a minor sprain.

I'll go on record to say I truly don't care if we win the tip or not. But I felt like Otule won quite a few more than he lost.

What do MUScoopers think?

Sidenote - In HS, we had a coach who played a kid ONLY for the jump. And would take him out at the first dead ball. Sometimes this costed us 2-4 points alone b/c he was that bad.
The "average fan" is an idiot.

Someone else should jump.  Wilson or Jones or whatever.

Actually, Gardner did "win" the tip against Green Bay as GB's excellent big guy misplayed the ball and Gardner tap it out as the ball came down. :D

Too bad Fulce can't come in and tip-off still. Those were the best 45 seconds of playing time he ever had.

He knocked N. Colorado's center out of the game with a hip check on the opening tip.  I'd say Gardner is 2 for 2.

If  we lose the tip, do we get the ball out at the start of the 2nd half?
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

If there are no tie-ups in the first half yes.

No disrespect intended but I couldn't care less about the tip as long as we're in a world of alternate possessions.

Wilson plays a long, athletic 6'8... he should jump when it's deemed important for MU to win the tip.

I dont' really care.  It is nice to win it, but the value of getting a tip is not worth starting a different player such as JWilson, in my opinion.

So, does the team that has the arrow get the ball to start the second half?  If so, how often does the team that looses the tip get the ball to start the second half?  Probably more than 50% of the time, would be my guess.  If it is 75%, I'd just as well loose the opening tip.  That first possession of the game seems to be a low field goal percentage possession (just based upon my observations - maybe a stat site has actual stats).

2-3 now. 3-3 if you count what Gardner did to UNC's center.
