From Weekly Watch, Observations from the week that was by Jason King, ...

3. Todd Mayo is a stud. O.J. Mayo's younger brother signed with Marquette last spring and arrived on campus with little fanfare. Ten games into his freshman season, Mayo appears to be the steal of the 2011 recruiting class. The guard scored 22 points in Saturday's win over Northern Colorado, when he replaced Darius Johnson-Odom in the starting lineup. Johnson-Odom was serving a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules. For the season, Mayo is averaging 11 points in just 19.8 minutes per game.

Hope they drop the "OJ's little brother" soon and just say "Marquette's stud freshman, Todd Mayo"

Warrior

I don't think connecting him to an NBA star can hurt recruiting.

Hope not. OJ press is good press.

96warrior

If I recall correctly, some on this board had reservations about signing the younger brother of a troubled NBA player. Just saying I'd rather he was identified primarily as Marquette's stud freshman and not the little brother of some other basketball player, NBA status or otherwise.

Windyplayer

Well deserved. He is in fact a stud,

nycwarrior

Good for Todd. He works like a Warrior. He's earned his minutes and the accolades he's now getting, regardless of who his big brother is.

He played a heck of a half against Northern Colorado. Can you imagine him learning to lock in like that every night?

You're correct.  Time to start referring to OJ as Todd Mayo's big brother.   ;)

I like this idea, but it's too bad it's unlinkely that he'll have a night like he did against Norther Colorado every night. Obviously, DJO won't be out every night, but BE play will start soon too. But hey, he's already had one other SOTG so who knows!

He might not have another night like that this year, but it is nice to know that we can get points off the bench, and will have an adequate replacement for DJO next year.

This year we don't need him to have a SOTG performance at every game. He's had great minutes in a number of games in addition to his two SOTG showings. I've been really pleasantly surprised by his performance out of the gate as a freshman and eager to see how he does in BEast play - think he's going to be a killer for us.

His play will also open up things for DJO when they are on the court together.  Teams have to play Todd and not swing the defense away from him.

A line up I want to see out there from time to time is Vander at point, DJO and Todd on the wings, Crowder and JWilson down low.  That would be an awfully athletic 5.  Difficult to defend, yet a good defensive 5.

Believe Todd was the X Factor and quite possibly the primary catalyst for our win over Wisconsin.  The big stage did not rattle Todd.  Few environments MU encounters in the Big East would be as hostile/big of stage as the Kohl Center.  Believe Todd's trajectory will only continue to rise as this season goes on - he is absolutely capable of being a 14 point per night player with 25 minutes of PT - plus he'll rebound, assist and defend a little.  Rarely will we ever see Todd out of control.  If only DJO could play with the same tempo/rhythm!

Todd will HAVE to be on the floor for 25 minutes per game the rest of the way.  Probably will cut into Junior's PT...
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

He is going to play more and more minutes every game. He has ice water in his veins and knows how to play D. He was a big part of the UW win and that will help come BE season. I believe that he is the best freshman we have had in a long time, including D James.

Seth Davis also had this to say in his Hoop Thoughts column:

QuoteDid anyone know that Todd Mayo was this good? Marquette's 6-3 freshman guard, who's O.J. Mayo's younger brother, has scored in double figures in his last five games, including his season-high 22 in a rout of Northern Colorado. He wasn't ranked in the top 100 of his high school class by Scout.com, Rivals.com, or ESPNU.
