Penn State joins battle for Jordan

With the letter-of-intent signing period just four days away, the recruiting of Loyola guard Jeff Jordan is heating up.

Penn State, which has signed Jordan's close friend and Ramblers running back Joe Suhey for football, is making a strong push for the 6-foot-2-inch son of Michael Jordan.

"I'm working on him because I'd love to have him come with me," Suhey said.

"I'm going to the Blue-White spring game April 21, but that's the same day Jeff is playing in his dad's all-star game at Madison Square Garden. It's not that far away—maybe he'll make a visit to Penn State."

Suhey is hoping to wear the same No. 32 that his dad, Matt, who later played for the Bears, wore as a Nittany Lion.

Loyola has been at the forefront of Jeff's recruiting the last two years, and he has played well in games at the Gentile Center. Valparaiso is also a leading contender, along with Davidson. In recent weeks Illinois and Northwestern have talked to Jordan about being a preferred walk-on.

Loyola is close on another top recruit, 6-4 Conant guard Geoff McCammon—the fastest-rising prospect in the senior class. McCammon is scheduled to visit Eastern Kentucky over the weekend and could make a decision by Monday.

In football St. Rita's 6-3, 230-pound junior defensive end Darius Fleming has 15 scholarship offers—including from Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.

"I don't have a favorite right now," said Fleming, who said he could make a decision this spring.

Fleming had 105 tackles last season with nine sacks, three fumble recoveries and six pass deflections.

According to football recruiting analyst Tim O'Halloran, Montini junior defensive tackle Garrett Goebel (6-5, 264) has 13 offers, including Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, North Carolina State and Purdue. York junior offensive tackle Neil Deiters (6-9, 342) has offers from Virginia and Toledo, with Michigan and Northwestern coming on strong.

Hoops honors

Washington's 6-6 All-Stater DeAndre Liggins has been selected for the Adidas national team and will compete in a world tournament Aug. 3-7 in New Orleans.

Former Young stars Quentin Richardson, Cordell Henry and Dennis Gates headline the list of 10 players to be inducted into the Public League coaches association's Hall of Fame April 28 at Hawthorne Racecourse. Roy Condotti (Westinghouse) will be among the coaches inducted.

Simeon's Derrick Rose has been named Gatordade's 2006-07 Illinois Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
