Jeff Goodman has a take on the "toughness" label always given to Marquette.

Saunders started with it last night and it continued throughout the game.  Can't wait for it to end.

Since when was Hayward a "mid-major" recruit?  Thought he made at least one top 100 list coming out of ND prep.  Also, Butler originally committed to Mississippi St., then picked up a late offer from Kentucky coming out of JUCO.

And I'm not exactly sure why anyone would be offended by the "toughness" label.  I like that our team plays with an edge.  We're definitely stacked with talent, but everyone goes all out and no one plays like a prima donna.  That's what I take toughness to mean.  I don't think it's a slight in the least.

I agree with Goodmand on this one...it seems media and game announcers almost refuse to refer to us as a talented team but instead just say our "toughness" won us the game. This is almost similar to Tebow situation in that everyone refuses to call a good QB but rather just say "he's a winner".

It's always good to have a chip on your shoulder, even if it's a chip over everyone calling you "tough" :P

A team being called "tough" is like a girl being told she has a pretty face. It sounds like a compliment but the implication is that there are other faults. By constantly referencing a team's toughness, it makes it sound like there's a lack of talent.

Well, now they know we have a pretty face and were stacked too or should I say they know were tough and talented.
