when a player gets hurt. When Chris went down they continued to play allowing UW 5 on 4 and connecting on a 3 pointer if I remember correctly. Could the refs have stopped play? I can remember some games when a player got hurt, play was stopped almost immediately.

Quote
Section 10. Stopping Game and Shot Clocks
The game clock and shot clock, if running, shall be stopped when an official:
...
Art. 2. Stops play:
a. At the expiration of time for each period.
b. Because of an injury, blood or a lost, displaced or irritated contact lens.
...
Art. 6. Suspends play immediately when necessary to protect an injured player.
Art. 7. Suspends play after the ball is dead or controlled by the injured player's
team or when the opponents complete a play after a player is injured.
a. A play shall be completed when a team withholds the ball from play by
ceasing to attempt to score or advance the ball to a scoring position.
Art. 8. Suspends play at the earliest possible time when a player incurs a wound
that causes bleeding or has blood on his or her body caused by blood from another
player's wound. Allow for 20 seconds to remedy the situation before instructing
the player to leave the game.

So it appears that since Chris was out of bounds and in no immediate danger they were able to wait until Washington no long had possession of the ball.

except that he was writhing in pain... it wasn't a fast break and as I remember, they brought it back out for a better shot... I thought they were a little slow there, I was screaming at my tv.

Thanks, but I agree with dw3's assessment. Also, the rule says SHALL (NOT MAY) be stopped because of an injury, which they did not do. My take is that play should stop when a player gets hurt and not be at the discretion of the officials.

I actually thought the refs did a good job there.  There are three of them and none blew it dead.  I have seen similar situations called pretty much the same.

I've seen opposing coaches see an opposition player down like Otule was and call to the refs to stop the action.  Buzz has done it and Al did it.  It's a matter of courtesy and respect.

Agree.  Officials do not like to stop it if the other team has an advantage/opportunity to score, such as a break or the team that has the ball is the one with the player down.

Saturday, they let MU go through the break with the opportunity to score.  When they missed, they stopped the game to let Gardner be attended to.  Some UW fans were upset, as it appeared UW had a possible break.

The rule, simply stated, is subjective.

I thought the injury was handled like they are always handled.  It stinks seeing your guy hurt on the floor, but it is standard to let the game go until the injured player's team gains control of the ball.

Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

Didn't have a major issue with it since he was out of bounds...but speaking of issues with out of bounds plays; why was that UW 3 allowed to bounce on top of the backboard twice and not called out??

You want phony sportsmanship watch soccer. No disrespect to Chris but it's not UW's fault he can play.

On top of the backboard is OK...over the backboard isn't.

Correct.  The only time on top of the backboard is called is if it hits something, such as the 35 second clock.  Then it is a dead ball.

I just don't like the way this rule is enforced. Chris was down in intense pain yet the refs let play continue. Yesterday a Purdue player got hurt after they scored, Butler had the ball, refs called time out almost immediately to let the Purdue player limp off the court. Butler was not given a chance to get an easy bucket ala Washington. Chris was hurt far worse than that Purdue player yet they let him languish on the floor.
