Great article, brings back awesome memories and takes me back even further to Wolf, the Burkes, Brian Brunkhorst, Carbin, Smith, and all the rest. What a ride back then. I believe the Mind Probe was a shot of everything white in the bar, and cheap.

Wait, this Charles Pierce?   http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=27392.0

The same Charles Pierce that our fans here destroyed when he wrote something else about MU?  So we love him when he writes something non controversial, but he is a no nothing hack when he has an opinion about another aspect of Marquette?

Or is this a different Charles Pierce?   :o

Same guy, same agenda. As someone (Sultan, I think) pointed out, the "investigation" by the Department of Education is a procedural one that will likely result in a fine for the university. Pierce gives it a much more sinister slant while wrapping his cheap shot in a puff piece about how smart he is and how great his MU (basketball and drinking) experience was.

So, to answer your question, no. I don't love him now any more than I loved him then. He was, and still is, a tool.

Sir Lawrence

Another memory from the NIT/Maravich game:  Jeff Sewell guarded Maravich in the NIT championship game and shut him down (along with Dean M)-Maravich didn't score for 19 straight minutes.  The story is that afterwards Sewell is reputed to have commented, when asked about guarding Maravich, "just give me enough money for burgers at McDonald's and I'll take care of the rest."

Cocky, yes, but he did take care of Maravich.

Sir Larwence---My memory has Jackie Burke shutting down Pistol and saying "money for a hamburger and cab fare and I'll shut him down every day". You could very well be right, just wondering.

Yup, you are correct.  Burke, not Sewell.  Thanks for correcting the record!

Sir---Only wanted to know to make sure Jackie told me true story. In early 70's he lived an eight iron away and he told me the story a 1000x. Was hoping I could bust his chops for stealing the line.

You cats are so old, you must have Half-Heimers. The Warriors beat LSU in the semi-finals. St. John's ate crap in the championship game.

Again, you are correct.  This is about the 14th time you've bailed me out.  You have to admit, however, that the LSU game was the marquis matchup.  Maravich's and all.  Pretty soon, I'll just make crap up, and see if anyone notices.......

LSU was the big game and Dean holding trophy on top of head was formality after LSU went down.

I remember it today, like it was yesterday. I was there in attendance. Just for grins, the 4th team at the Garden was.......................Army.....................coached by........................RMK.

Too bad Coach K had left Army. The year before.

77 and 4ever---You guys are good. I was sitting on our porch on 49th and Wisconsin when we won the NIT...just a kid.

And after MU blew LSU out in the semis, Knight and the Cadets beat Maravich and co. in the 3rd place game.

After many ST Pattys trips to the free baloney sandwiches; the real golden goose answers.  How are you since we must have met with Toothless and Charlie.  I know all the real stories.

I used to like the "play" where Brell would lose his shoe (someone stepped on the back of his Chuck Taylors) and the team would dribble the ball in the front court while waiting for him to get his shoe back on then he'd run back into the offense and inevitably get a rebound or tip in or something to the roars of the arena crowd.  I believe Bill Neary even pulled that off a few years later in a nostalgic moment.

When I googgled Gary Brell's name, I found an old interview of him in the JS.  Kind of fun to read.  Notice the "AP Cage Top 10 Ranking" to the right of the page...shows MU ranked #2 behind UCLA.

That was the standard for much of the 70's.
1) UCLA
2) Marquette

If only they seeded back then.  UCLA had an easy route to the Final 4 each year.  ... what might have been.

I'll have to dig this stat up again, but a great trivia question that not many get correct, is what University had the second best winning percentage during the 1970's decade?  It was our misfortune to be competing with the greatest decade-long record in the histroy of college hoops by UCLA.
