"I expect he'll be in uniform on Sunday and I expect he won't play."

Looks like this suspension is gonna hurt him (and marquette) a lot more than just 3 games. Hope he gets some time so he can develop some confidence because I think he'd really help us this year.

westcoastwarrior

I think it is a little "tough love" from Buzz...he will get plenty of opportunity through December.

Markusquette

I still won't be surprised if he gets some spot minutes if we have a decent lead.

brewcity77

I think it will come down to the score a lot. If it's a tight game, we won't see him. If we're blowing them out, he'll get in late. But this is our first real test, so there's a decent chance he won't get in there.

nyg

I thought three game suspension was severe enough for taking a baseball game ticket.  Hope Buzz doesn't ride the kid too long.

Huh?  Don't understand that.  So Buzz' punishment is more severe than the NCAA's and that automatically "hurts" MU?  Sorry, just don't buy it.  I suspect he is making it one more game as a statement.

If you read the NCAA Rules, which I am certain Juan was aware of, the section about gifts is quite clear.  The first bullet point is that a student athlete may not accept tickets from a booster.

Had this not been found out in advance, there is a possibility that MU forfeits game(s).  So, I have no issue with Buzz punishing Juan more severely than the NCAA.

jeffreyweee

So you think our highest rated recruit coming into the year not having as much time to develop his roll and join the rotation doesn't hurt MU? Interesting.

Whether or not you agree with Buzz making a statement or Juan knowing the rules doesn't matter - Juan not playing hurts MU and the longer he doesn't play the more it hurts MU.

Hmm...I'll give you a maybe at best. Only one freshman has averaged over 5 mpg in Big East play since Buzz arrived, and that was Vander Blue. It's easy to say that Mayo, DW, and Juan will all be double-digit minute guys all season long, but I'll believe it when I see it. Even Vander had a huge dropoff in minutes as a freshman. I don't expect this will continue come January and February.

No, I do not.  Short term, maybe.  Long term, no.  If he played, he likely would not have played much anyway.

I don't question the discipline that the coach decides.  You do.  I can tell you have never coached.

rocky_warrior

Huh, doesn't immediately sound like punishment.  Just sounds like Buzz being honest that he doesn't expect Juan to be ready to play in what he expects to be a close game against Mississippi.  Just my take.

That could be an accurate interpretation.  He missed several days with the team and will miss tomorrow, for all practical purposes, as well.

GGGG

Remember he also missed practice days with his foot in a boot.

Good point.  I did not hear Buzz' comments, but I am leaning more towards Rocky's interpretation.  Buzz does not like to put someone in before he believes they are ready.  That may very well be the case here.

Yep, based on Buzz's comments it's definitely not punishment from Buzz.  He spoke of how it was a "kid's mistake" and that Juan "probably didn't even know the Brewers were in Milwaukee".  After saying he probably wouldn't play he hinted that the current team is playing well together as if it would be tough to disrupt that in a close game.  If it's a 20 point game he definitely gets in, otherwise we've seen before it can take awhile to play catch up after getting behind under Buzz.

Buzz also said that Juan "probably didn't even know what the World Series is". I know it's been awhile for people in Oakland, but they have been to the playoffs in his lifetime  ::)

Missed practices, lack of game time, flying in and getting one walk-through.    Juan will play, but probably not tomorrow.    Buzz isn't mad at him, but everybody here knows how reluctant he is to play people he does not consider ready.    Root for a blowout so we can see him for a couple of minutes.

agree with the non-punishment from Buzz camp here...

he stated that Juan was just a 'kid', who probably didn't know what the Brewers even were, etc.
based upon that, I can't see him being punished further-  just needing time to catch up, especially with early season practice injury limitations.

EDIT: Should have read the other posts here first...you guys covered it. Totally agree with the non-punishment camp. In fact, for Buzz, I thought he was pretty high on Juan during that segment. Then, also like Buzz, he kept it real: Juan probably won't play.

Am I missing something...the NCAA didn't suspend Juan, did it?  I thought that Marquette was self reporting and self-imposed this suspension.  If that's the case, I have a hard time seeing why Buzz would impose an even harsher penalty.  I think he's just saying Juan might not be ready.

So you think our big east record will be different if a freshman plays 10 minutes on november 20th? Interesting.

Buzz saying "I expect he won't play." could just be another Buzz mind game to get him motivated.  (I'm not saying that in a negative sense, it's just another tool in his motivational toolbox.)

If he plays, great, I'd like to see him get in there.  If not, hopefully the game is well in hand.

Nope, NCAA suspension. Straight off GoMarquette.com:
QuoteMarquette freshman Juan Anderson has been suspended by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the first three games of the 2011-12 season for accepting a free ticket to a local sporting event, a violation of NCAA rules.

It was a self-reported secondary violation with a self-imposed penalty that the NCAA rubber-stamped.
