I'm almost in shock.  I expected at least a game 50 years ago or something, but nothing.  wow.

So if we win, we'll be able to say we've defeated Mississippi every single time we ever met them. Gotta win, big bragging rights. And we have to show Nick Williams he shouldn't have left ;)

50 years ago, I believe that there was a state law in Mississippi forbidding Ole Miss from playing basketball games against teams with black players.  While back then Marquette probably qualified, as a result of the law Mississippi tended to avoid scheduling teams from the north.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Yes, it was an unwritten law. Pretty interesting story about Mississippi State sneaking out of the state to play in the 1963 NCAA tournament against Loyola Chicago (who went on to win the whole thing.)

Found this with some articles about it. http://www.kinesiology.msstate.edu/pdf/mccarthy_history.pdf There's also a documentary called Game of Change.

I remember talking to a player from the 50s about this and it kinda went both ways. Southern schools didn't play teams with black players, MU didn't play teams that wouldn't play teams with black players.

The story I heard was with South Carolina when there was still segregation. the black players on MU's team had to stay in a different place than the white guys. The team ended up staying outside the Columbia city limits so they could all stay together
