If anyone is planning on attending the season opener this Friday, Joe Fucle and I are hosting the Marquette Nation's Countdown to Tipoff at 7:15 at the Bradley Center.  We will be teaching the new fanatics the cheers of the student section and we are also trying to involve new cheers as well.  This is not only for the student section, but for the whole arena.  If you have any ideas visit our facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=175332059220219 and post your new ideas, or post them on this thread and I will relay the message.  The new cheer will be voted on and be presented at halftime.

Joe Fucle...is that the bald dude with the hollow knees?  Did he change his name?

Do us all a favor and get rid of the spirit fingers during free throws. It makes us look like clowns. Terrible.

What would you propose?  The shocker?  That makes us look like we're 15.

Timely.  I was already working up a post on how to increase Marquette's home court advantage and will put it up on Cracked Sidewalks.

Legitimate or not, credit to someone for making an effort.

The student section was pathetic last season. Would be nice to see some organized effort made for the newbies to learn the ropes.

Hell, I just hope a couple thousand show up on Friday. Have we sunk that low?

That irritating announcer guy tried to do a quick intro course for new fans last year.  Everyone ignored him.  It was hilarious :)

There's a bit of research out there on how to influence free throw shooting.  IIRC, Mark Cuban hired some analysts to look into it.  When people wave their hands back and forth (like MU students do), it just becomes background noise to the FT shooter.

However, if all the fans start with hands on one side (say the left), and then wave their hands to the right while the opponent is shooting, that CAN impact the FT shooter.  Repeat for right to left or even, down to a pop-up.  Obviously not a ton, but more productive than just yelling and screaming.

There aren't a ton of fanbases that actually do this (I think Duke, Georgetown, Utah State?).  I'd love if the student section could coordinate their actions for FT shooting too.

Perhaps once Tom Crean is fired at Indiana, MU can rehire him in a chief student section officer capacity..and MU can once again reclaim its greatness.  If only Buzz would do things like this:

Get rid of the 'Fire Up, Marquette, Fire Up' cheer.  It is brutal!  :'(

It is pathetic, so junior high, and has the opposite effect.

* If any of you cheerleaders read this, please take note.
