How do they pick the coaches?

MUCrew

For anyone counting:  2 ACC, 6 BEAST

For kicks: 4 ACC teams attaining votes, 10 BEAST attaining votes.  I hate the ACC.

Silkk the Shaka

Not that pre-season polls mean much of anything, but for the non-con

#7 Vandy at home
#14 Wisconsin on the road
#30 Washington neutral

Then in conference

#4 UConn
#5 Syracuse
#8 Louisville
#11 Pitt
#22 Cincinnati (twice)
#34 Nova (twice)
#37 WVU
#40 St. John's
#49 ND

That's 14 top 40 games from the coaches' poll.  We also play Georgetown twice, and I could see them being a top 50 computer team.  Another tough schedule - should help us on Selection Sunday again

That Vandy game could be ginormous if we both come in unbeaten. Tough task, as we have Bucky and they have Louisville, but that could easily be a top ten matchup. And with games like UNC/UK and Duke/Ohio St playing, it's not unthinkable that the winner of that game could enter the new year in the top 5.

Personally, I find what's on the "Tournament Results" line next to #5 and #15 more meaningful than the poll itself.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

What tournament results line?  I went back to look, but couldn't find anything.

WarhawkWarrior

Wow, we have 14 times to prove ourselves as a contender against ranked teams.  Great schedule.

Hint: #5 is Cuse, #15 is Xavier.

That's not a hint, you completely gave it away!

preseason coach's poll is by far the most useless poll of the year. in comparison to football, the season is much longer and there is much more shifting. let's not forget last year Michigan State was picked second and they finished with 19-15 record, barely got into the tourney, and got bounced in the first round.

MU could meet #43 Virginia in the title game of the Paradise Jam.
If we are all thinking alike, we're not thinking at all. It's OK to disagree. Just don't be disagreeable.

All these "experts" are sub-standard....replugging my CS article from season's end...

My bad... I was looking at the "Complete Poll" link (that lists last game(s) results and upcoming matchups) on ESPN.com.

But Rocky nailed it.

Add: I can't remember if it was Lunardi, Katz, Bilas, or Forde, but one of them said a couple years ago that most Coaches Poll ballots are not actually filled out by the coach.  They are typically filled out by an assistant and in some cases by one of the graduate students.  Although most will at least look over or approve the ballot before it's submitted, some coaches are completely hands-off.
