Interview from College Basketball Insider, Jon Rothstein.

Good chat w Marquette HC Buzz Williams - who dropped 31 pounds and looks great.

Buzz Williams on Marquette "We're more experienced this yr. This is the first time since my first yr we have more returnees than newcomers."

Williams on Darius Johnson-Odom"I wish I could help him earn more recognition. Everything he gets is bc of what he's done, not what is said."

Williams on Chris Otule + Davante Gardner "They've put me in a position to think about finishing a game w one of them on the floor."

Williams on Jamil Wilson "He go as far as he wants to. He's most similar to Jimmy Butler in terms of the guys we've had here."

Williams on JR Cadougan "It needs to be a breakout year. If it happens, it changes the landscape of our team."

Williams on Todd Mayo "He's really, really good. A lot of what he does reminds me of John Starks."

Williams on Vander Blue "He really understands the value of competition. He'll be able to help us more bc he has a better understanding."

31 lbs.?  Good for sweet tea.

Gotta spring for a whole new set of threads.

As a Bulls fan, I had a love/hate relationship with John Starks (which by the way, when was the last time a player has been compared to Starks?!?).  Sounds like even Buzz has been surprised by Mayo's skill level this early in his MU tenure.

Not suprised by his comments about Jamil.  We know Jamil's physical attributes, but half of what made JFB great was from the neck up.  I'm loving this comparison.

If you're a Bulls' fan how can you do anything but despise Starks? He came to the Bulls and basically admitted he didn't try after getting released. His career is a figment of the NY media who are desperate to find/annoint the next "legendary" Knick. Charles Oakley, one of the dumbest basketball players the Bulls ever had, also fits neatly into this category. Anthony Mason, Mark Jackson, Derek Harper...the list goes on and on. Meanwhile, players like Sidney Moncrief get short shrift for their truly great careers! Hell, if Glenn Robinson had played for the Knicks he'd be a national TV commentator.

Williams on Vander Blue "He really understands the value of competition. He'll be able to help us more bc he has a better understanding."

That smells like "role player for the foreseeable future". Oh well... new blood coming in to take over his minutes if he can't produce, hopefully like last year he will keep a positive attitude with limited minutes.  I'm wondering if the Mayo superlatives are more to motivate Vander.

Rothstein also projected Blue as a starter based on that conversation. maybe in person Buzz added other superlatives that made him think that. I gotta say I hope like hell Blue starts, because I think Jamil is really good and if Bluer is better than that - then look out BEast.

Has Buzz made any comments about the Big East?

Cant imagine the BE wants coaches commenting on the status of the conference.

Again...love/hate might not be the best choice of words (as we continue to get off track here).  How about hate/respect.  Similiarly to Rodman.  Couldn't stand playing against him, but admired the way he got under opponents skin.

You're right, by the time Starks got to Chicago (totally forgot that stint), his gas tank was on E.

Don't know if I totally agree with your analysis of Oakley either.  Dude couldn't jump over a book of matches, yet was incredibly creative at positioning his body (both offensively and defensively getting rebounds).  Honestly...reminds me a lot of Devante Gardner.

Re: Blue...  I would interpret his comments to be more of a hustle issue.  Remember the "NEXT PLAY!!" rant from last year?  I think the issue with him was taking posessions off...not going 100%.  Honestly, I don't see him as a role player...more of a defensive stopper type guard.

Re Starks...  Bulls fans should love him because he was a perfect foil for MJ.  Remember the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals?  Bulls lost the first two in MSG - Starks going off in Game 1.  They come back and win Game 3, but Jordan is 3-18 and held to 22 points.  Starks was thrown out of that game but was running his mouth afterwards.  Then MJ hangs 54 on the Knicks in Game 4.  The ultimate FU moment.

Then the series ends with this.

P.S. - Jordan was absolutely incredible when he was at his peak.  Man those clips take me back.

Hasn't stopped Rick Pitino, or to a lesser extent, Bob Huggins and Jim Calhoun.

That said, I think right now the basketball-only schools are staying pretty quiet on the matter.

Does anyone have this video link?  I didn't think that rant was at Vander.  I thought it was directed at Reggie or Junior.
