The Racine County Sports Hall of Fame is inducting Jim Chones (along with Jimmy Mac) in their inagural class.  The Racine JT has a preview piece going through his career that you may find interesting if you are younger and haven't heard the mid-season leap Chones made from Marquette to the ABA.

Still wonder what might have been.  Chones not only left during the seaons, but had another year after that.  At that time, leaving early was called "hardship" and you had to prove the need to be able to leave early.  It was not all that frequent to have players leave early - MU was stung the hardest.

Had Chones, McNeil and Lucas not all left early - back to back to back - might have had a run to break the string of UCLA championships.

Funny how the article mentions MSU. I can still picture Chones standing by himself in the lobby of the Varsity Theater during freshman week, wearing a Spartan windbreaker.

Marquette was 50-1 during Jim's career - 28-1 in 70-71 (lost by 1 to Ohio State in the tourney when Meminger fouled out for the only time in his career) and 22-0 when he left late in the 71-72 season.

When I was a freshmen at MUHS, I was not able to get a ticket to the game between St Cates (Chones) and MUHS (McGuire) as the demand was so great you could not get in unless you had purchased the season pass. I think St Cates won by 1 or 2 points. I hated missing that game.

Lenny Man, I was at that memorable Tourney game in Athens, GA that you speak of. That and the loss to Miami of Ohio were the two toughest losses to watch for all Warriors.
