Summarized...

Cautiously optimistic..
Yes thought is was inevitable at the beginning of big east, but got more and more comfortable... Surprising PITT/Cuse involved.
Nothing being mentioned about basketball only conference
Work together as best you can with other schools
Uconn/Rutgers -> haven't heard anything
Commitment to MU blahblahblah

TallTitan34

Damn I missed it.

Did he say anything about the teleconference with the non-football schools today?

dw3dw3dw3

Not really... just reiterated I believe what was talked about on that call before... No basketball only league at this point... meaning, must add new members to have enough football schools.

What happened to that supposed teleconference today with all of the BE bball only schools?  Sounds like we're sitting back and waiting.  This is not going to end well since it seems there is no plan.  If Gtown and Nova go, we're gonna end up in f'in A10.

Unless the football schools leave on their own, no way they would talk about a basketball only conference.  To start that requires MU and others to leave the BE and pay the exit fee.

muwarrior69

So, if MU were the last Big East Team to leave would we collect the 70 million in exit fees?

Just because he doesn't articulate a plan in a radio interview, doesn't mean that a plan doesn't exist.

Then we could start a football program and join the Big 10!

I agree.  Why would he show his hand (if he has anything to begin with) on espn milwaukee?

There will be no exit fees paid by anybody, if the conference votes to disban. Counting TCU there are 17 teams and I believe a simple majority (9 teams) can disban the conference. That is what I expect is going to happen. In the end their will be no 27 month waiting period or penalties.

CTWarrior

I can't imagine what the best AD and president on Earth could do about this.  We are at the mercy of football schools.  We were only ever the beneficiary of good will of the Syracuses and Pitts of the world because of their respect of the traditions of the origins of the Big East, especially, Nova, Georgetown, Providence and St Johns.  Now that keeping to those traditions threatens to do real harm to those schools, you can't blame them for looking out for themselves.

Assuming UConn, Rutgers, West Virginia and Louisville find their way to the ACC/SEC, the best scenario for us at this point is that the PAC 12 poaches TX, TX Tech, OK, and OK State and the remains of the Big 12 bond together with the remains of the Big East, like the old Metro and Great Midwest did back in the late 80s/early 90s.  Maybe not so good in football, but a hoops conference with Notre Dame, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Villanova, St Johns, DePaul and us would still be a top conference. Heck, maybe they grab Memphis, too and make it a no-doubt basketball first conference and it becomes a popular desitination for top basketball players.  That's a heck of a basketball conference, even with Seton Hall, TCU, Baylor, etc.

Otherwise, we'd be so lucky as to get into the A-10 (or 20 or whatever it is these days)

Yep, this means "I have no plan."

Because if he had a plan, he'd absolutely go on the radio and share it with everybody, especially in this atmosphere of transparency and candor.

Blackhat

I think the most influential and proactive measure Pilarz can take is to make sure that he gets in tight with the presidents at Nova, G Town, St. John's, S Hall, etc. and ensures that we are in a pact with these basketball rich schools going forward.  All schools with similar profiles and situation.

Football schools like Oklahoma, Kansas are not going to want to get into a conference with small northern Catholic institutes whom do nothing or little to benefit their football driven tv contracts.

No, but I would say, "We have a plan and something will be released in a few days" instead of "I am optimistic that this will all randomly work out in our favor because Fr Pilarz said that Baby Jesus gave us a thumbs up on this one."

Lawsuits are likely forthcoming. The less you say, the better. Cautiously optimistic is okay by me. Hold those cards close to the vest.

Agreed.  Plus, what plan would they want to divulge?  If MU states they are leaving, is that the right plan?  Is that in MU's interest?  They may have to come up with $5,000,000 in that scenario.

Both Broeker and Pilarz have stated they will do what is in the best interest of MU.  They have prepared for this day.  There was an expectation the BE might have blown up sooner.  Why divulge what those preparations are at this point?  What is to be gained by showing your cards now?

WTF plan could they have in the next few days?

I understand this is a bit of a whirlwind, but being irrational now will permanently screw MU.

Say nothing and work like hell behind the scenes.

I sometimes criticize you for being overly cautious and too nuanced by half, but in this instance I think you're spot on.
