Hate him, but would take him in a second.

GGGG

Well, Coach K can be kind of a dick, but I'm not sure why you would "hate" him.  Jelous maybe???

Warriors4

Maybe.  Just in reading Tyus's reaction in the article to his phone call.  Seems likely that he can basically get any kid he wants.  I just hope someday Buzz and MU are the Coach K and Duke of today.   ;D

Buzz has so many offers out there for 2012, 2013 and now 2014, he is really due to land one of these Top 20 recruits.

With his record, he should have the ear of any kid in the nation. Especially a low flyer until the Peach Jam.

I've offered everyone in the Top 100 to play on my neighborhood's team too.  I'm bound to land a couple one of these years.

I hate him too. A bit jealous of the program he stewards, I admit. But the fact that he signs players who you know will see more time at MU than at Duke.

It's a year old article but it references the transfer trend at Duke:

"Since 2006, Duke has had five scholarship players transfer to other schools either before or shortly after their sophomore season.  Duke lost two of its 2005 recruiting class members in Eric Boateng and Jamal Boykin. Taylor King transfered to Villanova after his freshman season at Duke in 2008.

After last season, Elliot Williams transferred to Memphis to be closer to his ailing mother.

Now, Czyz joins Williams as a departure from Duke's 2008 recruiting class, leaving Miles Plumlee as the only remaining member of that incoming class still at Duke (which is ironic since he was a last minute decommit from Stanford).

This is certainly a concerning trend for the Blue Devils program (although Williams' transfer should probably be looked at differently).

Sure, most of the players weren't significant contributors and had little chance of cracking the rotation before their junior or senior seasons, but think about this—Duke has lost half of its players from the 2007 and 2008 recruiting classes. That won't exactly help Duke field an experienced team in a few years."

In fact, 2007 recruits Singler and Smith both stayed on for their senior campaigns.
But Irving departed for the draft meaning only two recruits from their 2010 class remain: Hairston and Thornton.
With the 3rd Plumlee in the mix, Kelly will be lucky to see his 20 mpg increase.

I guess I wish we had that luxury of star player out, star player in.

Until then, it's GTST. Every Damn Day.

This. We aren't Duke and never will be. The underdog/chip-on-our-shoulder attitude has been/is/always will be at the center of the Warrior identity. As much as some would like to think otherwise, MU fans need to continue to embrace this reality. Our team will always have to work harder and out-hustle the competition, and I love that.

As much as it would be nice to be a pretty boy program with stud recruits waiting at the door for an offer, I just don't see it. We'll continue to improve (and have success in the tournament), and I do think that Buzz will get some of these blue-chip guys in the future, but I think that they will always retain that Junkyard Dog identity, and I wouldn't really want it any other way.

it's really an honor just to be considered by these kids.

4everwarriors

I see it as those kids should be honored that Marquette is considering them.

I don't quite understand the strategy of making so many offers when there are so few openings.  It seems to undermine the value of an offer.  Shouldn't an offer be made with a deadline for acceptance?  I also don't understand why it is so difficult to fill a scholarship period for a blue chip team like Marquette!

TedBaxter

Without the spring recruiting period available for coaches to go out and see players, some of the kids this month are being seen live for the first time.  If I'm not mistaken, verbal commitments are lagging compared to recent years among the top 150, although Buzz already has 2 of his 4 openings filled.

Probably around 90% of offers are conditional.
