Would love to see Faust and Breunig in a package deal.

Well, I believe MU has five days left (5/18/11) in the signing period and all the speculation will end.  Do they sign one or two recruits?  Stay tuned.......

Tulsa Warrior

The 18th is not a drop dead date.  The LOI is non binding after the 18th.  The secret after that date is to get the recruit on campus and enrolled.

brewcity77

Faust and Breunig coming together would be a huge coup, though I'd want Breunig more simply based on need. The only drawback is that it would take our only scholarships for 2012, but a class of Faust, Anderson, Breunig, Mayo, and Wilson would certainly be one that was rated pretty highly by any objective observer.

Signing period means nothing.  Faust can't even sign an NLI for 2011-12 as of TODAY.

He's gonna, "wait and see whoever calls"

Nick Faust, Sterling Gibbs reopen recruitments
One day after Maryland introduced Mark Turgeon as its new men's basketball coach, the Terps' 2011 recruiting class dwindled from three members to zero.

City shooting guard Nick Faust and Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) point guard Sterling Gibbs both said Thursday that they were granted releases from their letters of intent. Maryland's third class of 2011 signee, German forward Martin Breunig, requested to be released from his letter of intent Wednesday, according to InsideMDSports.com.

Faust said Thursday he has considered reopening his recruitment "ever since Gary [Williams] retired. Me and my parents have just been talking to see what the best fit is, basically just going to make the right decision and [figure out] where I want to go from here."

Gibbs also discussed his options with his family before going forward with his request.

"We just felt that it was in our best interest to just explore our options," Gibbs said. "Maryland is still my top priority. But I just want to make sure that it was the best fit for me."

Faust said he didn't have a specific list of schools, but he is "definitely still considering" Maryland. Aside from the Terps, the 6-foot-5 senior said he'll wait and "see whoever calls." Faust, a Baltimore Sun first-team All-Metro selection this year, said his conversations with Turgeon have been positive.

"He's a great guy, great coach," Faust said. "I told him that I just wanted to do this to make sure I go to the best place for me. ... I know he respected that. He gave me the option of being able to weigh my options. I respect him for that also."

Gibbs said his AAU coach, Gary Charles of the New York Panthers, was fielding calls from interested colleges. Charles told SNY.tv that Dayton, Louisville, Notre Dame, Providence, Seton Hall and Texas were among the programs that inquired about Gibbs.

"It was definitely a rough decision because when I signed my letter of intent, I signed with Gary Williams," Gibbs said. "When I heard he retired, it was definitely tough to try to develop a relationship with someone who I don't know and someone who hardly knows me within a couple days."

Still, Gibbs said he has had "a couple good conversations" with Turgeon, and reiterated that "Maryland is still my top priority." While his AAU coach handles the recruiting process, Gibbs plans to stay in touch with Faust.

"I've definitely been talking to Nick just about every day," Gibbs said. "And we've just been trying to talk it out. He's pretty much doing the same thing, just making sure that Maryland is the right place."

That is a broad (and unclear) question.  The thing to understand is that signing an NLI is not required.

You can only sign one NLI in a year.  Being release from an NLI allows you to pursue other opportunities, but you cannot sign another NLI.  Thus, the dates are irrelevant.

I'd rather have Faust based on talent.

Glad you answered that for me.  Thanks.

+1.  The guy is a top 50 player.  He would be our highest rated recruit in the class, and one of the highest rated recruits to come into Marquette in a long time.  We have 2 open scholarships.  Do everything you can to get him and if he wants in, he's in, in my opinion.

Actually, I think Vander was generally ranked higher than Faust on average......but pretty close.  You say tomatoe....

we have one scholie for this year and one for next year right?  so signing two seniors now would put us over the limit?

GGGG

With the Williams transfer, we have two left for 2011.

DCWarriors04

I thought with EWill transferring we had 2 this year to use...that being said...who cares if we use them to get someone like Faust, Breunig, or the guy from South Dakota that has a decent 3 point shot? If we want to have the best team, then use the scholarships to get the best players out there if they are available.

BCHoopster

The two kids from Maryland, did not want to come here initially, why does anyone think
they want to come here now?

Because they showed some interest when Marquette recruited them previously and because every highly-touted recruit should want to come to MU.

GGGG

I would care deeply if they wasted a scholarship on the transfer from South Dakota.

Go get 'em Buzz.  The timing is right!

Marquette finished a close second to Maryland in faust's initial recruitment (per evandanielsscout twitter this am).
I would assume we would be on the top of his list or near it.

Agreed.

You don't hand these things out like taffy at the checkout line.

If Faust shows a modicum of re-interest, you do all you can to land him. Buzz missed on his top five last summer but he shouldn't let a second chance slip. You never ignore talent.

NersEllenson

Keep in mind that Faust signed with Maryland before MU went on its Sweet 16 run as well.  There is more evidence now than at the time Faust signed with Maryland - that Buzz Williams is a very good coach - and with the liklihood Jimmy Butler gets drafted/named MVP of Portsmouth....player development also appears to be a strength of Buzz.

As Buzz said in the Chicago event the other night:  We are starting to realize the compound interest benefit of the work we've been doing the last 3 years...
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."
