Is it true that we only have one scholarship left for the next two years? If so, its almost certain that we need 2k sign a big. I wanted stokes and nolan but looks like we can't have both. Also really washed gabe york.

HoopsMalone

As of now, there is one opening for 2011.  Ideally, it would be another big so we have a big man ready to go when Otule leaves.

It's hard to say how to use it.  I am not a huge proponent of banking a scholarship in general, but it might be worth being picky here.  I don't know if there is anyone out there that would play next year anyway.  Might be worth having the flexibility to pick up a midyear transfer or another big next year.  I wouldn't go for another switchable unless he is over 6'7 personally.

Is that big guy from Maine still available?

BCHoopster

Seriously, I believe 2011 recruiting is over with the TJ commitment.  Does Buzz want to go over the
13 limit again, if so, I am one to say NO.  You only have one open next year, it is a long year, take
your time and get a 4 or 5 star power forward!  Could make MU a Top 10 team in 2012.

Why r we looking for a power forward and not a center

Correct.  We still have one open to use in 2011 (or in 2012 if it's "banked")

I prefer having quick, athletic forwards as our inside presence instead of having a true center.  A big switchable is fine by me :)

I think Buzz is done for the summer.  I wonder if they could 'quietly' give it to Singleton for this year with the understanding that it is only for one year?  Can that be done without any public announcement?

bilsu

Scholarships are one year renewable, so I think they could give it to him for a year. It would take away the possibility of a mid year transfer. I do not think Buzz is done recruiting for the year. Until all the legal issues are settled in a positive manner, we do not even know if all the players will be back.

The one year renewable contract thing is getting real old bilsu. I'm sure buzz would be real successful telling parents that coming to MU is a one year deal. Hey mrs. Williams, I know your son will be 1000 miles away, but don't worry we'll take good care of him....and if we don't like him we'll cut him next year. The worst take I've read on this board.

But I agree, buzz isn't done, he never is.

The guy from Maine is going juco. Can't recall his name.

Besides all that, which is entirely accurate, what's the value of bringing in a kid you already deem unworthy of a scholarship beyond one year? If that's the case, ou've already determined he's not an impact player - and certainly not an immediate impact player - so why bother?

The one year renewable was directly relaled to the poster's question whether they could give a scholarship to Singleton for one year, since it was not going to be used otherwise. I believe you should only recruit players you plan on keeping until their eligibility is used up.

We have one scholarship left for 2011.  York is a 2012.  We have one left for 2012, as well.  If the 2011 schollie gets banked then we have two left after Ferguson for 2012, and could get a biggie and York.  Of course, that assumes that no one leaves.

Modification: I wrote the above before I checked out the Taylor news.  We could still get York, if we bank the 2011 schollie or if someone leaves, but I've got to think that the odds are against it, as the need for a biggie would be far greater.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

There are no schollies left for 2012, if buzz were to bank then there would be one scholarship left for 2012.

You know, the more you look at the way this schollie deal is stacking up, and that we need a big, with only one schollie left for the next two years, I am starting to think that somebody is moving on. It is just pure speculation, but with the emphasis Williams is putting on guards, somebody may be gone. Don't know who but this is looking that way.
We definitely need get a big committment.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Here's the new 2012 rankings.  Review and notice MU interest. Interest will probably change now that Taylor committed and unless Buzz banks the 2011 schollie, there is zero left.

Guards: Junior, Blue, Mayo, Wilson, Taylor, Ferguson and walk on Singleton. Thats seven.  Who knows?

Wannah Bail.

If he doesn't make MU's starting five by his fourth year, he'll already be - by then - a 4x Vitale Best Name 1st Teamer!

True, but spread out pretty well based on when they'll graduate.

2012: DJO
2013: Junior Cadougan, Dave Singleton
2014: Vander Blue, Jamail Jones
2015: Todd Mayo, Derrick Wilson, TJ Taylor
2016: Jamal Ferguson

The only class that looks at all unbalanced is 2015, and that's because Taylor comes in with three years of eligibility. I'd say of the nine total guards we have either here or in the pipeline, having their graduation spread out over five years with no more than three graduating at once is a pretty solid setup.

GGGG

Six scholarship guards (seven if you count Singleton), aren't that many for a team that runs a lot of three guard offenses.

bilsu

Perfect balance would be 5 guards, 5 forwards, three centers and a walk on. Singleton is the walk on. We are short a center.

Stretchdeltsig

We keep checking every day for the post announcing the signing of a "big."  Still wishing it happens.

Traditionally, yeah that is perfect balance.  But I am not sure that is how you construct a college team today.  There are many more guards and forwards in basketball today than centers.  The question that Buzz is probably asking himself often is, do you sign a guy like Philip Nolan or a guy like TJ Taylor?

Nolan is a tall center, but like most of them, needs some work both on the court and in the weight room.  Or would you rather sign another guard like Taylor who can get on the floor immediately and probably take your team further than Nolan would.

Of course what you would rather do is sign a real, talented big man.  But if you cannot do that, signing quality regardless of position is probably more important than perfect positional balance.
