Pick #22 overall. New York Liberty.

Congrats to her.

Markusquette

I didn't know the women's draft was so soon.  Cool for her.

brewcity77

Glad to see, hopefully this will help Mitchell with her own recruiting.

That's awesome. Very proud of her. 22nd seems pretty high though, I didn't know she had that good of a year...?

SaveOD238

Congrats to Angel!  Is she the first ever from Marquette to play in the WNBA?

22nd out of a total of 36 picks.....Angel is one of St. Paul Central H.S.'s finest.

Perhaps WNBA, but Kathy Andrykowski was drafted by the New York Stars of the WBL but was traded to the New Orleans Pride in the final season of the WBL (1980-81). She also played professionally overseas in England, Italy and Spain.

(p.s. - got that from our wiki http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/women_s_basketball/kathy_andrykowski)

rocky_warrior

Aha, from the Gomarquette ...

She will be the second player in Marquette women's basketball history to be drafted. Abbie Willenborg was the first when the Houston Comets selected her with the 64th pick in the 2000 draft.

If I am reading the WNBA website right....NY just traded her to her hometown team the MN Lynx.

Smart move by the Lynx IMO. Always good to get people with Minnesota connections for attendance and interest purposes. I remember some disappointment when the Lynx passed on Janel Mccarville after the Lady Gopher's FF run.  The real question is... how many MU grads playing in the Target Center does it take to get you down to a game?! Sadly, I still haven't gone down to see Lazar yet.

I have a bet going with a friend of mine from the Purdue Athletic Department that has been going on for over a decade.  Which league will fold first....MLS or WNBA.

I took WNBA to go first, he took MLS.

WNBA definitely the safe bet. As long as MLS keeps adding international players like Beckham, Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez, I really don't see them going anywhere. I believe MLS has added teams in consecutive years too (San Jose last year, Portland this year). Not to mention Ochocinco really giving the league some good credibility...

The other person in the bet has a bias against soccer, so that was part of the thinking I'm sure.

It's nice to bet against those people.  With as many immigrants as America has, and as popular Soccer is worldwide, it's tough to bet against MLS.

The only problem is that David Stern is dead set on pouring good money after bad on the WNBA. He'll see to it that the NBA subsidizes the WNBA in some form as long as it possibly can.

SaintPaulWarrior

according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Carol Slezak. Slezak wrote about how the NBA pressured Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf into starting a team. While most cities sell out their pro sports teams' inaugural seasons, the Chicago WNBA franchise is begging 7,500 fans to buy season tickets. Saying "it's not something we're doing to see a financial gain," Reinsdorf said his highest hope was to break even financially. Then why do it? That's not a sports team. It's a charity case. Or a political cause for feminists who can't compete on their own in the sports marketplace, so they've gotten the NBA to strong arm its owners.

This is an old article but still true and pretty funny.  I am pretty sure Reinsdorf who is only worth $280mill(2005 numbers) never got strong armed.  The T-Wolves owner Taylor is worth 1.8 billion(2005 numbers) and he is losing about $20 mill on his main team and I have no idea how much money he is throwing at his women's team but I guess he can afford it.

She had a very good year and Marquette's performance in their 2nd round NCAA Tourney game at Tennessee gained her a lot of attention and helped her WNBA Draft prospects.  I hope she's able to make the Lynx roster - she would become the first Marquette player to play in the WNBA if she does make the team.

I can't wait to get season tickets with SaintPaulWarrior!

Liquor Lyle's has a shuttle to all Lynxessss' games.  I still think we can get pretty good seats.

While it's not the Prem and likely never will be, the MLS isn't going anywhere. Recent additions like Seattle, Philly, and Portland have very well supported teams and the recent influx of foreign veteran talent has raised the standard of play greatly. I would probably put the MLS on par with League One, and the top teams could probably compete in the Championship. It's become a pretty good product, and there's enough of a niche market that it won't go away any time.

Abbie Willenborg from 1996-2000 was drafted by the Comets in the second round. I think she was the last pick of the draft.

Stronghold

Didn't Maya Moore get drafted to the Lynx?  Would be cool for Angel to play with her.

Eye

Lynx had the first pick, and I'd assume Moore was the 1st pick, so I'd assume yes.

WNBA should be retitled, "NBAT9" as in "National Basketball Association Title 9."

She was the last pick of the 2000 draft and was cut by the Comets during training camp.

And yes the Lynx took Maya Moore with the first pick of the WNBA draft this year.
