So I read a story the other day about Christian Laettner wanting to get into coaching and that he was going to go to the Final Four this weekend to see who he could talk to about assistant coaching positions. My brother-in-law (also a Marquette grad) and I were talking about the possibility last night and we both thought it would be a good idea for Buzz to talk to him about a spot, especially if Buzz loses some of his assistants this spring. What do you guys think?

Terrible idea.  I'm sure his heart will be in it after picking up his family from their Florida beach front home and moving them to Milwaukee.  I can't think of a person with a more opposite coaching upbringing than Buzz and him.

Laettner never seemed like an overall bright guy to me.  Maybe it was his speaking voice but he seemed kind of dim.  Plus given what he did for Coack K, why would he not hire him?

Laettner should get his start as an assistant at Mid Major to start to prove himself.

So all of you wouldn't even consider arguably the best college basketball player of the past 25 years on the coaching staff at Marquette? If any of you guys had called him a pretty boy prima donna to his face he'd have probably punched your lights out back in the day. Hate him all you want, but that guy could play and had a killer attitude on the floor during his college days. He came through in the clutch pretty much every time he had to for Duke. My guess is he could teach the kids a thing or two -- especially Otule and Gardner -- about how to play with toughness out there and how to get in to position to make a positive play.

Now, I am only focusing on his college career, as after his first 5 years in the NBA he seemed to go through the motions, but I think he admitted that he was burned out by then, even though he played another 8 years.

I don't know. If I were Buzz I would at least talk to him. If there isn't a fit or chemistry, then move on to the next guy. Can't hurt talking to him.

So what portions of this hyperbole support him being a good coach, or even a coach?

Duke has a very broad coaching tree (Ammaker, Brey, Dawkins), and CL should have tons of contacts built over the years-- it should tell you everything that not a single one has hired him.

Do you see a red flag in his facing multi million $ judgments, for unpaid business debts, and finally now, deciding  to go to back to work, as a coach. The nicest thing they could find to say was the Hurleys complimenting him for coming up to a charity golf event, and not wanting anything, in return. Let the Hurley boys at Wagner offer him an unpaid spot, with them....he is quoted, however,  as shooting not for that, but rather the big $ of head coaching...as if...NOT!!

How would you imagine an "entitled" singularity, not known for a good head, camradarie, or team  leadership, such as he,  would contribute to players/coaches in the Buzz system.

CL needs to clean up and repay his Blue Devil Partners, even if it means bankruptcy, and then, he will have learned manhood lessons, better equipping him to coach someone else.

I would not even consider him for even the most menial job that MU basketball has to offer.  That job should go to someone in house or someone who actually earned it.

Obviously, people here do not like the idea of him ever being considered for an assistant coach job here at MU. Fine by me. I think he has more to offer as an assistant coach than others do here. Some guys will be the video coordinator or unpaid assistant, but many others start at the assistant level after their playing days. Brad Stevens I believe worked on Wall Street or in insurance or something before he became an assistant at Butler. You have to do more of the menial stuff if you never played the game like Buzz. Former players sometimes can bypass the grad assistant, unpaid assistant jobs.

Brad Stevens was an unpaid assistant before getting a paid assistant job at Butler.  Christain Laettner hasn't done anything basketball related in over 6 years.  The point is, a lot of guys put in time or show that they can DO the job.  CL has not really shown that he cares about the sport in years, and is probably in it for the money.

Yes, we should definately go for a "go through the motions kind of guy.  that's the kind of character guy that Buzz wants on his staff."
