Now that Buzz got MU to pay him top dollar, do you think he will be able to get
better recruits which I still question, how is it outside today?   Or does it just show other
coaches that this is not a stepping stone job?  Crean left because he could not get
5 star players, will this be the same for Buzz?

What does your first question mean? Are you asking how it is outside today? The weather?

Excellent analysis on yur part, now go solve the budget mess.

Buzz does need to step up recruiting.  Need Juan Anderson recruits to be the basal not the ceiling in a class if we really want to be elite.  It's been a tough transition for Buzz I'm sure but I'm  surprised he hasn't landed his R Jax from JUCO yet.  A guy like JUCO from Chicago Stan Simpson would go a long way at Marquette.

???  Wow.  So unless Buzz can be Al McGuire and land Top 20 kids and win recruiting battles over North Carolina, Kansas, etc..you'll be disappointed?  Has it been a "tough transition?"  Can you share with us when MU had 7 consensus Top 100 guys on the roster as we'll see next year?  I'm curious to know what he "needs to step up?"

DJO, first team Juco All-American
Buycks first team Juco All-Amwerican
Crowder, Juco POY.

Buzz is setting world records with recruiting.  No one has done better.  Repeat no one.  But it has not been good enough for you?

At minimum one top 100 guy 6'9" (PF-C) or above is needed to get us to a perennial top 25 team.    Ners, love your passion for buzz but we aren't all going to be spit shining Buzz's shoes, there are areas for improvement in our program. Getting above .500 in the Big East and back to a top 25 position is something that should be a goal for us so some are going to look for solutions on how to get there.

Out of curiousity, how many current top 100 guys 6'9" or taller would you trade for Gardner?  I get sick of all the 5 star, top 100 stuff.  I remember BMA posting a great deal of information on this site showing ratings are a pretty crude way to guage expectations of a class.

No worries Stone Cold - just think calling out Buzz's recruiting isn't an area to be critical of.  You could debate in game coaching - which is always subjective - but to me we can't argue much with the recruiting results thus far.  I really don't think we HAVE to get a Top 100 6'9" kid to be a perennial top 25 team.  Heck with Pomroy ratings we pretty much finished 27th last year and 32 this year (yet were a Sweet 16 team).

This past year's team had 9 years of returning experience - far and away Buzz's youngest/least experienced team of his 3 thus far.  Let's see where things are at in Year 4 and 5 - I suspect we will be a Top 25 team by next year, definitely in 2012-2013.  We are on the right track!!

Love Gardner's offensive skill set.  But I feel this program sorely needs a guy with length who is an excellent rebounder and defender over offense.   I love Otule but as we found out against the big boys he has his mobility limitations.   One guy like Alex Oriahki would really take this program to a consistent top 25 level.

And ners I do like very much how Buzz has recruited the backcourt and SF position.  Better recruiting at the PF, C position for length would really benefit us and the fans deserve a stud rim rocker at least once a decade (would have felt dirty cheering for Mbakwe).

Buzz has been searching for one.  Finishing so close on Tarik Black and Mike Shaw was unfortunate.

The next hurdle for Buzz and MU will be to sign a top 25 kid from time to time.  I know everybody will say "one and done" but that is not necessarily the case.  I'm talking about guys like Scottie Reynolds from Nova.  Buzz has done a very good job of raising the overall quality of players at MU but he has yet to sign a game changer (Blue was close but he was from Wisconsin and of course the jury is still out on him).  You can only play 5 guys at a time so while raising the overall quality means MU is less likely to be bad or have very down years it is harder to have that very special Top 10, Big East Champ, 1 Seed kind of season.  Buzz really swung for the fences last year and wiffed on most of the guys he wanted.  The reason given was, without playing time to sell MU just wasn't attractive enough.  We will have taken a step forward when we get those top guys, not all the time, but from time to time, like you see at Pitt, Nova, UCONN, Louisville and Syr.  The common denominator is that all programs have established coaches that aren't expected to be going anywhere and programs that have won a lot recently.  Are we now there???  WE'll see but it seems we are at least knocking on the door.

brewcity77

Why don't we let some of Buzz's recruits mature a bit before getting down on his recruiting. Cadougan started getting some PT at the end of the year and is now looking like a legitimate Big East starting point guard. Give him two years, as well as two years of development from Blue and we could have one of the best backcourts in the conference come 2012-13. At the same time, we'll have both Otule and Gardner up front with more experience and likely in better condition. Both have looked better than their initial recruiting ratings, so I can't see much room for complaint there. And with Wilson, Jones, Williams, and Anderson all still there at that time, we'll have plenty of switchable options.

I know it's tough to constantly hear "wait and see", but I think the best thing to say about Buzz's current recruits is "wait and see". Yes, I want to see him land a Quincy Miller-type player, but when I look at this roster, I think we could be incredibly good in 2 years without much need for improving the roster.

MU_Iceman

I like the depth of our talent going forward.  While landing the big fish is always nice, some of the best college teams in the past decade have been programs stocked with 2nd round players (see any Tom Izzo team)...I don't know that we've got any world beaters on this roster or in the recruiting pipeline, but I think Buzz & Co. is putting together a team of players capable of developing into that "2nd Round" type of talent...having a few of those guys around for four years would be a situation I'd be excited about

Good things are on the horizon!

Reynolds wasn't a top 25 kid.

He was rated 75 by Rivals.

We need good players. Who gives a crap what they were rated?

Butler is in its 2nd straight final 4. The only top 100 guy they have is Howard. He was 91 on Rivals.

Mack wasn't in the top 100. Neither was their star from last year Gordon Hayward.

I'd rather have 4 years of Matt Howard then 1 of Demarcus Cousins.

All we need is a Trevor Mbakwe type of guy with his head screwed on straight.
